CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt has extra "Sheaves"

Hey all, apologies if this has probably already been reported but I noticed during Trap practice in the Marianas, my Carrier has extra "Sheaves" on deck, ( obviously no arresting cables attached ) I'm not sure why this is so  🤔

If you look closely, that's where the Barricade stanchions are. That wire is rarely used but @draconusis right. Not all wires are used all of the time. Sometimes they have a maintenance issue and have to be short stripped (detached and wrapped around the sheaves). Sometimes the engine is offline for whatever reason. There were several times when only 2 wires where on-line.
I wait for the day that this can be modeled in DCS. Like Biggie said, "it was all a dream"!

On a pedantic note, your Helo hold is backwards, and your crane is pointed in the wrong direction! TheE-2 and Crane should swap places.

DO it or Don't, but don't cry about it. Real men don't cry!

Thank you Jackjack171 for the speedy response & all the info. And I appreciate the equipment & aircraft placement tips too.. will definitely make those changes soon brother.

Cheers GA  🙏 👍

Afterthought:  I also read that some Carriers only have 3 arresting wires, so which is the optimal catch for the Jet? I'm guessing still the 3rd wire yes or would it be the 2nd?

USS Ronald Reagan and USS George H.W. Bush were retrofitted with 3 wires instead of the usual 4, and all Gerald R. Ford-class carriers have 3 wires. The optimal wire to catch in those configurations is the 2-wire.

Reason being is that the aimpoint for the hook is the middle of all the wires. In the 4-wire configuration, this puts the hook halfway between the second and third wires, so it catches the 3-wire as it goes forward. In the 3-wire configuration, the second wire is right in the middle where the hook aimpoint should be.

Just remember GazAce, the Seahawks are towed from the tail so wherever you place them, there must be room left at the tail for the tug and tow bar. Same goes for the fixed wing. They are towed from the nose so they will normally be tailed (pushed backwards) into wherever they are going to be spotted if it's up against a deck edge or obstruction such as the island.

Yeah, the E-2 and the Tilly should swap. Also, the boom on the crane is always facing outboard, over the water. We have to back the crane out whenever we use it. This is one of the better ones that I've seen. The safe parking lines are not being encroached upon! @AG-51_Razoris spot on!

I don't believe that you could get those Seahawks parked there up against the island without having a large number of plane handlers pushing them into place by hand.
