Heh, must be a relatively recent term then (relative to my experience at least ... late 70's thru to mid 80's). Even when I worked with US forces I never heard the terminology except with regard to strike aircraft.

been around from the 40's

30+ years flight sims

I was U.S. Army from '89 to '95, aviation. We considered "grunts" to be slightly insulting, and generally used it when poking fun at our ground-based pals. When being nice, we typically called them ground pounders. *shrug*

Yeah was thinking longbow II myself, flying a Uh-60 or an OH-58 now that would be cool, your buddies could fly escort for you.

Heheh whatdyknow... we used the term with pride!

Cheers!

"A true 'sandbox flight sim' requires hi-fidelity flyable non-combat utility/support aircraft."

Wishlist Terrains - Bigger maps

Wishlist Modules - A variety of utility aircraft to better reflect the support role. E.g. Flying the Hornet ... big yawn ... flying a Caribou on a beer run to Singapore? Count me in. Extracting a Recon Patrol from a hastily prepared landing strip at a random 6 figure grid reference? Now yer talking!

I would wet myself for a Kiowa. don't know why, but I've always loved that airframe.

Also an AH-6J would be awesome.. hellfire, stinger, .50 cal miniguns, 40mm grenade launchers, rockets... Imagine doors off straffing runs in the mountains at night

Something about the Scout/Light attack role apeals to me and both of those helos are based on aircraft I might end up flying someday.

A mil 17 / 8 with which could be loaded with or without missiles sounds very tempting:)

This poll is really just a dream. While I cannot obviously speak for ED, I am confident that there will be no non-combat helicopters for the next several years at least. There are just too many other aircraft that are being developed already.

And besides, if they make a transport bird, the first one better not be an Mi-8. That thing is like flying a dump truck.

It's safe to say that if ED was going to develop it, they would have access to everything they needed. But out of curiousity, which manuals do you have, the Russian ones, or American (TSMO)? I'm not sure where you're from, but if it's the U.S., we might have some of the same colleagues. ;)

Mi-8 besides being used as a transport helicopter, can also be used for attack.

About the manuals...I have neither of them, I mean what you said. I have the manuals used by our pilots. Unfortunately they`re in my language and they`re translated from the original Russian ones. I have them because my father has them because he`s a flight engineer on Mi-8/17.

Off-topic: I work on the Boeing 737...in case ED wants to make one :D

It would be a fun thing to include the MD-500 armed scout helicopter since it is used in many airforces arround the world and depicted in many movies as the adversary helicopter. :)

Besides flowerpower aircraft belong to MS flight SIM. ;)

Yes! :P even unarmed!

I see myself flying along the coast with the soundtrack of "Magnum" in the radio....

:music_whistling:

...sorry for being off topic. (once again...).

Edit:Found It !

But than (serious) we need also a Sikorsky S-58T aka "Screaming Mimi" from "Riptide"

Never heard of infantry being called "groundpounders" before ... we're grunts or foot-sloggers ... recon are grunts, and so are (spec ops such as the SAS, commando's etc), when they work in or under the the umbrella domain of the infantry ;).

But yes, this aspect could be interesting for me, a chance to relive the old days, hope they model the Kiowa, the Huey or the Chinnook though.

Well, no military experience myself; got a brother in the Canadian Forces, he refers to regular infantry as groundpounders, bush beaters, cannon fodder, grunts; or other less savoury names better left unwritten...

This thread makes me want to read 'Chickenhawk' again, that book made me realize how hairy those situations must be...re: not having the ability to dodge enemy fire, or fire back!!
