Hallo Pilots!

I would like to know if my current system would be fit enough to support VR in respect of performance. I think my specs are not high end but they probably will be sufficient to enjoy DCS in VR. I don't want to get into the spiral of upgrading like crazy to use VR.

So please if some of the Pilots with experience with VR can have a look at the numbers and tell me if I should go 3D.

And here comes the obvious question: Which VR set would you recommend having my specs in mind...

Thank you and Horrido! SYATM

Yes, you will be able to play vr with your system,

just note only having 16gb RAM is your weak area. 32GB RAM would be better.

As for headset, personally I use a reverb G2

thanks

I'd look at either the quest 2 or G2.  G2 has higher native resolution.  You probably wont be able to run it quite at native with a 3070; but it still looks great even at 80 or 90%, and it leaves you an upgrade path.

Oculus -- erm, meta -- software is easier to use and I feel the motion smoothing is a little better.  If you're interested in Oculus games like Lone Echo, and might want to play beat sabre without firing up your computer, definitely go with the Quest 2.

G2 is a comfortable headset, reminds me of the Rift S (I hear the quest 2 isn't quite as comfy).  It is THE headset for DCS.  The sharper the image, the better DCS plays.   And the G2 is definitely sharp, maybe too sharp for some tastes.  I bought mine a couple of months ago, and it looks like all the bugs have been ironed out.  I've had no problems with the cable, tracking works perfectly, sound is good.  (And will admit, windows seems to handle the microphone and headphone management a bit better for the G2 than it did for my old Rift S.  I'm not a huge fan of SteamVR but WMR is pretty solid work)

They are closer in price than you might think, once you buy the cable for the Quest 2.

If you go with the G2 let us know, there are a couple of steps involved in getting it set up, we can break it down for ya.

DCS works fantastic in VR and it. is. amazing.  Just wait.  First time you spawn in on the deck of the carrier is unbelievable, a moment that will be seared in your brain forever.  Go for it. Immediately.

Oh man…

HP take my money!!!!

Since I owe a TM Warthog, do I need other equipment additionally? I saw a couple of used G2 for around 440€. Are used VRs a viable option or it is recommended to get a new set?

Cant wait…

Are there any different versions of the G2 that I should be aware of? I read about a new cable, any thoughts on that? Do I need those controllers for DCS?

Again Thanks!!

I would think by now most stock has the new cable, it has been out a while now.

If you happened to get one with the old cable ( link box would not have on/off button) I am sure they would send you one if requested. Fwiw I ran my G2 just fine for quite a while with the original cable. I ended up purchasing the new cable just to have it if needed.

No you do not need controllers for DCS but afaik they come with the G2 anyways. There are some made for VR games that are a blast to play - Half Life Alyx for example.

Worth thinking about what kind of pointing device you want.  I went with a gaming mouse, the extra programmable buttons are nice.  Depending on how your cockpit is set up, a trackball might work better (you can strap it to your leg or velcro it to a  knee board).  Miles's pontctrl is probably the ultimate device if you can get your hands on one (google the forum).  Also vaicom/voiceattack adds a LOT to VR and is well worth the price.  It is possible to use VR controllers as pointing devices but meh.  Gets old fast.

Thanks for all the inputs, but….

It would be my first VR set. Will the G2 be best choice or are there alternatives? Do the most pilots in DCS use the G2?

I run a g2 on my 3070, if you can run it at 60hz then you should be able to run at mostly high settings at full resolution. 90Hz you will need to reduce settings although it can still look great. On Caucasus I run 12-19ms (80ish to 55ish fps), Syria I get 16-22ms.

As mentioned, 16gb will be a limitation on certain maps, Caucasus will be fine but Syria will blitz it.

Yes Reverb G2 would be your best choice to get into VR. Good price level and very good display. Really best bang for your buck.

Go with the G2 and if all possible up your Ram to at least 32gb. I can’t remember when the last time I used my trackerIR and 2D stuff. I think the top of my skull has a groove in it now.

So I think I will go with the G2. Do I need to be aware of different versions? I just found out the the cable needs to be the M6 in order to avoid connection problems. Anything else?

BTW: great community!!!

Nope you should be golden. You can tell easily if you get the new cable ( which I feel you will). If the Link Box has an on/off button then it is the new cable.

If you buy new then you should get the new cable, if for whatever reason it's not then it should be swapped by hp. If you buy second hand then make sure that it has the V2 cable before you buy. As above the V2 cable has a power button on the breakout box.
