I was teaching another newbie yesterday, and after teaching part of it, he went to play on his own (Multiplayer). I noticed that after it locked onto a target with the radar, the IFF identified it as a red bandit, but after the downing we found out that he actually hit a friend. This happened twice, we were on the blue side, and the downed friendly aircraft were Su25T and MiG19 (Red aircraft in blue side).
The AWACS in the server didn't seem to be working at the time, and after locking in STT mode, it was identified as an enemy aircraft. Is this a sign that NCTR is working correctly?

Probably, although NCTR only really tells you the type of the aircraft, which, sure enough, you can read on the MFD while in STT. I don't know if it should automatically assign IFF, probably not, given the possibility of former Soviet aircraft being on the same side as Hornets in a modern conflict.

From my testing, magically.

It's just able to identify aircraft that are being STT'd within a certain range (IIRC 30 nmi?) and it didn't care much about aspect.

It automatically changes the HAFU too, depending on which side the aircraft belongs to.

It should be able to perform NCTR using jet engine modulation, if your radar is able to look into the turbine blades from either the front or the rear.

If the aircraft type is present in the opposing coalition only, it'll contribute towards declaring the target as a Hostile, via the ROE matrix.

IFF works separately. If you run an interrogation and you receive no reply, it's also contributing towards a Hostile status.

If you have two separate sources contributing towards a Hostile status, then the ROE matrix Hostile criterion is satisfied and the HAFU turns to Hostile. (If donors are present, the usual two contributing sources are a donor marking them as Hostile and your own IFF interrogation getting no reply, so getting an NCTR print is not required.)

Sounds like he didn't have IFF on. Being friendly in DCS guarantees a positive mode 4 reply if you interrogate it. So NCTR knew that the aircraft is ine in the theater that's enemy, plus it had a negative return.

All the aircrafts on this server are hot, so IFF is turned on by default.
