I just had a quick look at various tank ammo and most of them have tracers. Could some of the tank experts confirm that tanks usually fire tracer ammo? If this is indeed realistic, I think it would add a lot to the look of the game.

Well in that case it would be nice to also have tracers for tank rounds in DCS. Doesn't sound like a very complicated thing to implement.

This would also help to get a better feeling when you are being under fire by tanks. Right now the first thing I usually notice of being engaged by tanks is a sabot in the face :) (laser warning is usually illuminated nonstop anyway)

I can't speak for all tanks, but for the most part all US main HEAT tank rounds are tracer. I can speak for M2 Bradleys and say that all 25mm rounds are tracer.

When firing at helicopters, I think tanks would use canister shots, wich are super duper shotgun shells.

Those don't have tracers.

But yeah, Tracers for other types of round would be nice. Sometime, all I see is a puff of smoke... 1 sec later, the game kinda lag for a sec and bouff... in flame I go.

It's fun!

They shouldn't be. Canister rounds, at least for the M1 Abrams, only have a maximum range of 800 meters, and that's against infantry. They are designed for use against infantry, not for use against halicopters.

Shotguns make horrible, horrible anti-air weapons unless your target is right in your face.

It's a sick feeling, isn't it. You're squinting at the TV, locking some big monster up, and you notice--hey it's pointing right at me. Then that big POOF in black and white. uhoh.

Although BS does not currently model different types of main gun ammunition for tanks, it may still be useful to clear this up for any future development. Do I understand correctly that specifically HEAT rounds are tracer? I guess this makes sense - you wouldn't expect a sabot to tracer.

Fundamentally, the round currently assumed in Black Shark is Sabot. It even has a 3D model. It behaves like a hybrid round though, which also makes sense for a simulation that does not account for various types of ammo in the tank.

In any case though, something to consider.

Well I don't know. I'm not a tanker, but I have seen M1's fire HEAT rounds and they were tracer rounds.

Our (M2 ODS Bradley) sabot rounds are tracer rounds, so the tanks may be the same way. I just don't know about those guys. The cut away drawing above is a sabot and its got a tracer burn in the rear.

This is real world. Luckily I haven't seen and main tank rounds come at me in the sim yet. Not to say they haven't shot me down, but I just haven't seen them... :)

One other small note on tanks: Leopards and Abrams always take two missles. I know they are tough. But an ass shot should disable them, right?

One thing that's really well done is the wreakage, tracks half off, hatches open etc.

Yeah had the same thing happen, saw a lot of white smoke coming out of the tank and thought did someone else and hit it, then BANG BANG all dead. Pays not to hover with in range.

From my experience, APFSDS is tracer and HEAT isn't. That's the M1 and Leo (the shoot the same shell anyway) I do not have infos on Soviet shells or rifled 120mm shells that challenger tanks use.

Did some looking around and found that Russian and British SABOT shells have tracers in them aswell.

Might aswell just give all the tanks tracers for their main guns then.

I have had on a few occasions been supported by an Abrams, and to be honest if it had tracer you (I) couldn't tell (in daytime). Events in those environments don't allow you to stare wide eyed at the booms. But I was light infantry, so my xp is very limited with tanks.

off topic a bit: At least we have a laser warning system in the shark to give you a heads up! Watch out for the T 55 (i think thats them) they dont have a laser (or dont seem to use it) so BOOM may be all you get.

yes i must say the damage models are excellent.. one thing that keeps bothering me is the flames.. but ill mod those one day i think

but ye.. more tracers would be fun.. makes you all .. jumpy.. i remember playing a mod for Battlefield 2.. and there where tracers on every 3 rounds for rifles..

then you had a map that was all fog in a forrest.. seeing those tracers soar past you scared the crap out of players.. ripping trees appart.. hitting your buddies.. etc etc

I vote yes for more tracers :D

The damage model isn't that complex for ground units yet, damage is the same all round. Since the front turret plates on those tanks can stop a Vikhr I guess they decided 2 shots to balance it out.

I'd prefer one missile though since everywhere else on the tank is vulnerable to Vikhrs, the chance of hitting the front turret plates is low and non existent from the side or rear.
