I know this is probably a very opinionated question, but what is the general consensus of the best World War II era combat simulator?

Is there a good forum that discusses WW2 simulators?

Thanks

mission4today is a good spot and simhq has a section for most sims. I havent played much other than il-2:1946 but it covers a good range of aircraft in a number of roles.

For WWII and prop planes sim IL-2 series is best by far. its successor will be improved WWII sim "Battle of Britain - Storm of War" produced by the same team that made IL-2 "Sturmovik" series, and possibly released end of 2009.

PC specs:

Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR

The general consensus is as follows (last time I heard):

IL2: multiplayer, massive number of aircraft to fly

Battle of Britain II: campaign and AI

If I may comment here with my knowledge but lack of first hand experience, the AI in BoB II is supposed to be very, very convincing. Much of their development time was put into making the AI good. It isn't simply "difficult", its actually realistic. On lower settings it makes mistakes and flies like a timid rookie. On high difficulties, it flies very aggressively. It has real-world limitations on situational awareness. In other words, you can sneak up on them and bounce them out of the sun since they are blinded by it.

The reason why they put so much time in it is probably because the campaign, much like Falcon, is considered the "main event" of the sim. There can quite literally be hundreds of AI aircraft in the air on a given mission. This is mainly just my guess, but I think with that type of scope they wanted to have very realistic AI to allow you to employ realistic tactics. All that would be ruined if the AI had super-human senses.

Ok, I don't to change the subjuct but, how well do these games run, do they take a really powerful computer to look good?

I have a

Q6600 OCed to 3Ghz, using stock cooling

EVGA 780i Mobo

EVGA 8800GTS 640MB, not OCed at the moment, but can be if needed

2GB basic Corsair RAM, 800Mhz I think

150GB Raptor HD

500W Antec PSU

Would the games yall mentioned run great on this, or do I need to beef it up in some way?

Do any of these games have playable demo's I could try so I could see how well my computer performs before I buy the game?

Also what is the latest up to date versions of IL2 and BoB, they have a few different version, its kind of confusing?

Thanks

4.08m I think is the last official patch. There is a version switcher so you can play MP with people who have bought IL2 + FB and all the other expansions over the years. Thats the great thing about IL2:1946 is that its all the patches + expansions in one install and will definitely run on your specs.

Yeah I also think IL2 runs the best out of any flight simulator there is. I always get a solid 120FPS no matter how many AI / explosions etc. there are. And I'm only running a HD4850/5600+ X2

Just clarifying:

IL2 versions prior to IL2 Sturmovik 1946 are not online compatible.

So dont buy anything (Forgotthen Battles, Pacific Fighters, Complete Collection...) prior to IL2 Sturmovik 1946 (U$ 9,99 via Stean).

The existing "switcher" is for unoficial IL2 "MODs" that certains online host dont allow (ie. Spit x 109).

I fly IL2 with the Fallen Angels Squadron, for the past 4 years, http://www.fallenangelssquadron.com/. It is by far the best WWII flight sim out there. A very active community, many squadrons, even real WWII pilots to speak to, for example just last night Art Feidler, a P51 pilot and Ace was on our comms to chat and tell us about the real deal of WWII combat.

Currently there are a number of mods, with a large part of the community now flying 4.09b1. New sounds, aircraft, etc. This mod/patch is unofficial.

However, the hacked 4.09b1 have breathed new life into the sim and I would suggest anyone interested in WWII aviation to go out and buy it, you will not be disappointed.

Just as the LOMAC Community was desperate for Black Shark the IL2 community is desperate to see "Storm of War" (Battle of Britain), we hope it lives up to its billing!

naval combat silent hunter 4

Combined w/ the RFB (Real Fleet Boat) expansion / supermod it's definitely the best subsim out there. The underlying game itself, however, does leave so much to be desired that UBI IMHO really screwed the lot when they decided to call it a "simulator". I mean, a sim where you don't even have independent engine control? Meaning once your rudder is gone you've no way whatsoever of steering the boat

But within those sometimes really aggravating limitations the game combined w/ RFB is indeed great fun - and as realistic as can be, too :)

The DCS Mi-8MTV2. The best aviational BBW experience you could ever dream of.

WW2OL (combined land, air, navy game) equipment has excellent physics, penetration, ballistics, spalling, concussion, flight etc. modeling... AFAIK, none of it is table based, pure physics (you can shoot a -42 Sherman all day frontally with a Pak 36 ATG and not penetrate, no hit point systems). Other non-lethal damage modelling is not as good. Game mechanics (how units move and fight etc.) are awful. But if you're happy to just fight you're ok - if you care about how the war progresses then you will get frustrated. Graphics appear crappy initially, but if you consider how large the area is and how far you can see, the graphics is actually pretty good.

Here's a link illustrating what I mean:
