FSX w/ UTX, GEX, FEX, & ASA: SOCHI FLIGHT

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I recently acquired FSX and was sufficiently impressed to rapidly add all the other abbreviations.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I've been spending a lot of time flying in the part of the world our favorite sim inhabits. I took a flight with Active Sky (for real time weather) running out of Sochi this morning. I condensed it for this video and thought I'd share: Sochi Flight.

I find the skies you can fly through in this sim (properly refitted) absolutely stunning. Of course, I keep thinking how awesome it would be to fly through these sorts of skies in LO/FC or future DCS titles. The reality, however, is that these skies alone take up a tremendous amount of computer resources. The added overhead of a military flight sim with accurate flight modeling, etc, would certainly bring my system to its knees. But I can dream. :)

Same here, the video wont work after 1 min.

I agree about the atmospheric modelling of FSX far more beautiful then BS engine. But I guess the current BS engine is not suitable for such atmosphering modelling. FSX has a more flexible and add-on friendly structure I suppose.

Maybe in future DCS add-ons, we will be delighted with such atmosphere...

Well, that sucks. It'll be a day or two before I'm home to upload it again.

I have no experience with TileProxy but I switched from REX to FEX for sky effects. FEX looks much more natural with less overhead (better framerates).

Hello Rich,Great to hear from you,I just purchased Ultimate Terrain X for FSX and was stunned at the beauty and realism it adds.I was thinking of adding REX but have read of problems with the install so now I'm thinking of FEX as my next purchase.

Can you tell us what kind of system you're running FSX on?I look forward to seeing your vid!!

Also have you checked these guy's out for addon aircraft? I just purchased the MD-11,It's incredible, the quality graphics and very realistic flight model will blow you away!!!

I think they'll probably get graphics like that when they go for the dx10 engine but it would most likely require a multicore PC.

REUPLOADED THE VIDEO. IT IS NOW A ZIP FILE. GIVE IT A TRY AND LET ME KNOW IF IT WORKS.

Hello Rich,Great to hear from you,I just purchased Ultimate Terrain X for FSX and was stunned at the beauty and realism it adds.I was thinking of adding REX but have read of problems with the install so now I'm thinking of FEX as my next purchase.

I had REX installed myself without any problems but the clouds it generates look a bit unnatural to my eye--a bit too crisp. OTOH, FEX's clouds fell very natural and, as an added feature, you can edit the clouds to your heart's content. The same is true of water effects, although I've been flying mostly over land so far and haven't paid much attention to water.

Here are some sceenshots I posted at Lockonfiles a few days ago with FEX installed. This was a recent flight out of Sochi:

2009-1-10_8-5-45-187.jpg

2009-1-11_6-33-52-500.jpg

And these sceenshots don't quite do them justice. They are a bit softer and more realistic viewed in the sim.

It's not a top end system because I couldn't afford the components. I'll give you the specs tomorrow when I get back home. I built the system and, then, promptly forgot what went into it. :)

Recently I've been enjoying the PC-12 from Flight1 (??). Don't remember off the top of my head.

Hey, in the 60 seconds of opening footage, what aircraft are you flying? It looks like a Hornet, is it the acceleration pack one?

Yes, that's from FSX Acceleration. When I first installed FSX, I couldn't bear the throught of flying enclosed cockpits. I needed the wide open views available in fast jet cockpits. :) So Acceleration was a must. Also, that brought me up to FSX SP2.

TileProxy,,, very simple..just follow carefull this post.

ONly remember this: dont install Tileproxy and/or its PhotoReal and Cache Folders (Manual designation) into same folder as FSX is...

Rich,Great pics and video[it worked fine with the zip] You're right about those clouds also,Fantastic!!! Looks like you are getting very good FPS with all that great scenery.

With that great atmosphere maybe you could remake your great and famous "Crimeon Tour" for FSX?

OK. Thanks for the link. I'll look into it. TileProxy certainly looks good from altitude.

Glad the video plays now. Hadn't thought of a Crimean Tour remake, though it has possibilities. I'll have to take a closer look at the area. My suspicion, however, is that autogen buildings will take the place of actual buildings and landmarks we have in LO/FC.

...Can you tell us what kind of system you're running FSX on?...

Now that I'm home and can look:

  1. MoBo: Gigabtye GA-EP45c-DS3R-DS3

  2. Processor: Intel Core 2 Dual e8400

  3. Memory: 4GB OCR DDR2 1066 (OCZ2N10662GK)

  4. Graphics Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 3850

I had decided to try an ATI card, since I have always gone with Nvidia in the past. Wouldn't you know it? FSX supposedly runs better on Nvidia cards.

Another convert! :) And some nice screens. Yes, FEX skies look very natural and are extremely FPS friendly, much more so than REX. I have now finally tweaked both my system and FSX to the point where I can usually capture full screen video with FRAPs while getting 20fps and only an occasional stutter (if any). So future video can be hi-def.

Very nice rich,I particularly like shots 2 and 5,they pick up the great ground detail in the small amount of light.very cool!!! Just curious, what sky and cloud theme are you using? or been using mostly?By your pics it's an excellent combo.

@ mikoyan

Hello mikoyan,Thanks for the complement, and I feel your pain before I bought my current rig,,,Intel Quad 4 9650 3ghz,4gig ram Nividia GTX260, I struggled for a long time trying to eek out 18 fps in LO out of a 6yr old Sony vio that didn't have enough system HD space to defrag itself!!!

I feel I'm in Heaven now!! lol

These are my current settings:

I've only tried a few other combinations. Don't have the time to really explore and these work well.

Absolutely amazing screens here!

Really considering getting FEX too.

Does it have a auto-weather generation like ActiveSky? Or it relies in FSX downloaded data?

Wasn't able to get it to work. FSX kept crashing when it hit about 40% texture load for a flight. I followed both the tutorial and manual closely.

Negative. FEX is a texture management program. With it you can change the look of clouds in the sim and even edit them to your heart's content. Water also. For real time weather I use ASA or, sometimes, FSX itself.

Sad news indeed. Sounds like the end of an era. Too bad FC doesn't have the clouds and weather that FSX does. I still enjoy sightseeing in FC. Weather would make it so much better.
