Horns Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 (edited) I just got an original Oculus Rift and have been flying with it just a couple of days. The one problem I've run into so far is reading the steam gauges in the pilot cockpit. Most I can figure out, but the four small dial numbers on the altitude gauge are completely unreadable to me. Is there a trick to deal with the blurry numbers on the gauges? Is this a problem that can only be fixed by using a higher resolution headset? Edit: Please note, I asked the question here because it is specific to the F-14. I'd be willing to use other modules to troubleshoot, but my aim is specifically to fly the F-14, whether the other modules are flyable in VR for me isn't terribly relevant. speed-of-heat Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 I can see them fine in my G2, but, i am running on very high settings. it is a straight resolution vs. performance issue as i understand it... the dials become more readable the higher the resolution of the headset but that causes a performance impact... zildac Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 (edited) You may want to take a look at this mod, which generally improves the readability and optimises some of the textures in the Tomcat in VR. It may allow you to "up" the resolution without affecting your performance negatively. https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/3313661/ Edited January 23, 2023 by zildac 14900KS | Maximus Hero Z690 | ASUS 4090 TUF OC | 64GB DDR5 6600 | DCS on 2TB NVMe | WarBRD+Warthog Stick | CM3 | TM TPR's | Varjo Aero
draconus Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 Without changing the headset you can also: 1. Look closer 2. Use zoom functions 3. Improve it a bit by selecting higher PD value, MSAA or SSAA - not all at the same time! Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria

I didn't think about using zoom, and you're right, anti aliasing and pixel density should help, thank you 1 Modules: [A-10C] [AJS 37] [AV8B N/A] [F-5E] [F-14] [F-15E] [F-16] [F/A-18C] [FC3] [Ka-50] [M-2000C] [Mig-21 bis] [Afghanistan] [Cold War: Germany] [Iraq] [Kola] [NTTR] [PG] [SC] Intel i9-14900KF, Nvidia GTX 4080, Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master X 64GB DDR5 @ 6400 MHz, SteelSeries Apex Pro, Asus ROG Gladius 3, VKB Gunfighter 3 w/ F-14 grip, VKB STECS throttle, Thrustmaster MFD Cougars x2, MFG Crosswind, DSD Flight Series button controller, XK-24, Meta Quest 3
Indianajon Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 Hi @Horns i used to use the same headset and while a different more recent headset will aid in this I found moving your head closer to the gauge also worked. It reached the state where based on the needle position I could get a rough idea and then moving my head would give me the detail as needed. It's not great but it does work. I think the advantages that vr gives during refuelling and around the boat make up for it though. Happy flying

Happy flying Thanks, I just tried moving my head closer to the gauges and you're right, they do get much clearer at a point. Not sure I can fly on a flat screen again! 2 Modules: [A-10C] [AJS 37] [AV8B N/A] [F-5E] [F-14] [F-15E] [F-16] [F/A-18C] [FC3] [Ka-50] [M-2000C] [Mig-21 bis] [Afghanistan] [Cold War: Germany] [Iraq] [Kola] [NTTR] [PG] [SC] Intel i9-14900KF, Nvidia GTX 4080, Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Master X 64GB DDR5 @ 6400 MHz, SteelSeries Apex Pro, Asus ROG Gladius 3, VKB Gunfighter 3 w/ F-14 grip, VKB STECS throttle, Thrustmaster MFD Cougars x2, MFG Crosswind, DSD Flight Series button controller, XK-24, Meta Quest 3
Nealius Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 I use the Quest 2 with Oculus resolution set to max and DCS PD set to 1.0. The gauges are readable enough. For the ones that aren't I go by visual cues. The altimeter, for example, we only really need to see the ten-thousand and thousand digits (leftmost 2). The rest I just go by where the needle is on the gauge, much like a clock, since I know where 1~9 are on the face of the gauge.
