Is it possible to designate straight from the JHMCS?

So i hadnt realized the hornet had hmd targeting, and been looking up on it, but is it possible to "Tag" things straight from the helmet, as the content i've seen he makes HUD Soi, designates then undesignates to get the stripey circle thing in the helmet then can redesignate with the helmet, just wondering if there is a way to jump straight to the helmets stripey reticle thingo (yes that is the technical term i think!), or must you always hud designate, undesignate, redesignate?

If you cant, implementing a Sensor control switch up LONG would be a nice touch from devs

Assigning the TDC to the HUD also assigns it to the HMD. With the TDC assigned to the HUD, the HMD should automatically have the dashed reticle (unless a TGT is already designated). You can't get the dashed reticle in the HMD while a TGT designation exists.

Here's from the manual, notice the important difference between how long you press the button.

ACM mode? is that for A/A? as i was mostly referring to air to ground, or does it work for both? i did try Tholodors suggestion which does work, although i find it quite difficult to accurately designate, tend to jump around a bit, so would 8 seconds up make the targeting more accurate u think?

I found the easiest way was to target roughly the right area, then switch to the TPOD to allow fine tuning

Ah you're talking about A/G, then forget what I posted 🙂 Thought you meant A/A locking via helmet. But for both modes it's important to align the HMD for better accuracy.

I've been having an issue with this.  I make sure nothing is designated and the TDC is assigned to the HUD and that I am in AG mode and see the dashed reticle in it.  Then I look to say a target to my right with the JHMCS.  I see the target, put the dashed reticle on it, and TDC designate.  The dashed reticle turns into a dashed diamond, as it should , but it immediately drifts away off target.  I don't know why.

The only thing I could do to get around it was as soon as it turns into the dashed diamond, I use the TDC slew controls to put it back on target then redesignate.  But it doesn't always work, at least accurately.

Am I missing something?  Or is my workaround actually how it should work?

im still learning this myself, but i think what you need to do is once the tgp slews on the target, make it soi and set either area or point track SHOULD hold it in place. a dashed box means its free to move, so not a designated target yet.... that being said i just had a weird bug in raven one, where my target was moving all over HSI depending on my heading, so who knows?!

OK, so basically, I should immediately lock it into place with the TGP?  I'll have to practice that, it's gonna take a little finger dancing.  TDC up to HUD, look at target, TDC to designate, immediately TDC to TGP then choose PTRK or ATRK before losing the target to drift.  Fun!

I'll give it a few shots and see how it goes.  Thanks!

I find it difficult to get the sequence correct (I often lose the target completely somehow between helmet and tgp clicks and keystrokes) but with practice it should come naturally. Great option for when you’re lost in the tgp display and have no clue where you’re looking.
