Ok I need your guys help and thoughts for guys that have been running VR a lot..

I am trying to decide if I should upgrade my computer even though I have a good setup already (see specs below) I’ve taken a deep dive into the DCS world and currently running it in VR. I know ED still needs to update the systems to be able to run VR better but right now I am running. Reverb G2 with open XR and getting around 35-45FPS which isn’t horrible but having to sacrifice on terrain texture and shadows etc. and even then I get the random frame drops and stutters after loading back into a session and I haven’t even tried multiplayer yet..

My question is would building a new PC running the new i9 13700K and a 4090 make a world of difference or is it just pissing in the wind hahahaha

My Current Computer Specs,

intel i7 12700K

RTX 3090

DDR5 64GB

Z690 mother board

Any Help would be awesome I figure I can’t be the only one in this same boat

thanks in advance

You'll be able to piss a bit further...
If this will be far enough will depend on your expectations.

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S, Elgato Streamdeck XL.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Just try to do all your homework before buying (which you appear to be doing) before pissing away your money.  I have read quite a few posts from people with super high-end systems like the one you're planning on getting being somewhat disappointed with their VR experience with DCS.  Not all though.

Your current system is certainly no slouch.  I think perhaps you should wait a while to see if DCS fulfills its promise to greatly upgrade their engine core soon.  It might just be that DCS will run like a dream on even mid-level systems like mine without the need to put out $2500 or so for an upgrade. 🙂

Your current system sounds good, new system sounds great. I don't think going from a 12thgen i7 to 13gen i7 would make a huge difference, however the GPU gains do seem to be quite good. Usually a level upgrade from one gen to next is only marginal improvement. I always give it a few generations before doing that.

I enjoy VR now on 3090, 64gb and i9 9900k, which is fine but chip now needs upgrade,.which is in planning. You may well get a lot of improvement with PC optimisation, reduce background applications as much as you can, ensure temps are good and hardware does not throttle etc. This can make massive difference.

first, have you tried to identify where exactly in what situations are you CPU or GPU limited?

Your system is already high up the hardware food chain. I would think twice about spending money just for DCS at this point.

On the other hand, a 4090 should give you an even bigger jump in performance. Think a 4090 can bring up to about 60% more power. Can also be worse depends on how DCS separates. From 40-60% is possible if you go by other VR benchmarks.

If you have more power you will also find a setting that you turn a little higher. Or turn the resolution a little higher. Then, from the best-case scenario of 60%, only 20% more fps are left. I can ask myself a question

Is it worth the cost to you

Option a, only more fps, result between 49-63 and 56-72.

Option b, more otpik and more fps between, 42-54 and 49-63.

If the money is just over why not, you get a lot more too. The difference from day to night, it is not, but a good jump.

An Intel 13000 to 12000 is only 4% more IPC and faster Ram support ex works, without OC.

Personally, I would only run a little OC there and install faster Ram.

Welcome to the club.

Since DCS released an update with "VR Support", I experienced the worst loss of image quality and performances I've seen ever, then AMD joined the fun with their driver update...

The point is, DCS developers needs to wake the hell up and sort out the whole thing up because with the same PC, other flight sims like Il2 or Microsoft F-S are playing like dream in VR with much better image quality, same for some other games like Elite Dangerous (not in the middle of nowhere but in a busy station it's close to DCS demands on GPUs), image quality is far better.

Unless people start saying it loud and louder and stop swallowing the Fairy Tales of those who pretend to have a viable solution with added Apps, this situation is gonna perdure, after all we're customers and support the game by purchasing modules, we should be treated as such, there have been some improvement but it's not yet what it used to be.

Just say it.
