Harms in PB mode

Anyone knows if the Harms are capable to target a WPTDSG point on the ground,  emitting or not?  I would think so. Either go to the point or self destruct?

Currently, they'll drift off a mile or so from the PB point and smack the ground if no programmed emitters are active.

No, the HARMs need an emitter to be at accurate. The HARM is going to a location, at an altitude where it can best see emitters within a 1 or 5nm (no source atm) radius of the reference target point. The new AARGMs (AGM-88E) have a GPS and improved INS to try to hit an emitter at its last known location.

Didn't the Shrike used to remember the location of a radar emitter in case they were turned off in flight?  Or am I just taking something from the "Flight of the Intruder" movie and turning it into reality?

I could imagine that they use some INS logic to keep flying at the target, be it just for the chance to reacquire the sensor or hit in the vague area. But mind that INS is inaccurate, and the missile doesnt actually know the exact location of the enemy transmitter. Shrikes and even HARMs use passive radar sensors, which are extremely inaccurate and cant tell range; kinda like really bad heatseeking missiles.

I think the HTS pod of the F-16 is probably a good example for a passive radar sensor. Even with triangulation, a "great" solution is if you got 1x1 mile accuracy.

And PB is not for shooting at the exact location of the enemy radar, but at the vague position inside of which it will seek for the radar. If you got the exact position, thats when you drop stuff like JSOWs at it.

How about the second part of my question: any self destruct features?  I was just imagining some major borkup with the swarm of HARMs raining down on friendly assets or some civies, just because the emitters cut out... :disgust:

no, they cannot be self destructed, they do that fine when they hit the ground

The movie got the Shrike and STARM confused. The STARM had a memory circuit which enabled it to remember the rough barring of a radar even if it shut down, the Shrike I don't believe ever did
