Hey Flim,

I too have an FSSB Cougar and a CH Suite. As much as I wanted the Cougar to win, I fly much much better with the CH Gear. I have tried 6 - 21 LBS of force and various curves/dead zones. I just can't hover that well with the Cougar. What setting are you using for your Kitty? I still think the Cougar is better for jets!

I tried my ch and it felt like a toy! Anyone want to trade a new CH setup for a cougar?

I have my fssb setup with a good deadzone, So I have to make my inputs happen. That way the helicopter doesn't get all crazy.

What are the settings you are using?

Deadzone? Curve? Pounds of force?

I too felt like the CH was very toy like compared to the Cougar, but I fly the Black Shark better with it.

If I try your settings maybe Ill like the Cougar.

I think the Cougar is great for Black Shark in the following flavors; Stock, Uber, and Uber II NXT. The FSSB is great for jets but not so much for the Shark. Agree with the post saying CH is a little light and feels a bit like a toy in comparison although it is highly reliable and well supported.

As an aside the short comings of the Stock Cougar and the potential cost to reduce or eliminate them entirely is greatly exaggerated. You can literally spend 5-10USD and own a stock Cougar that will last years and years without issue. IMHO it's advantages over the CH in other areas make it both worth the small inconvenience/expense of this and the right choice for myself and many of my squad mates and friends. At under 200USD for the Cougar it is an excellent choice. The community support at Cougarworld for the kitty is a vast knowledge base of info on everything that is Cougar related and an excellent source. Although TM has been fairly criticized in the past for their lack of support I have seen a big improvement in this regard in recent years.

Maybe our constant banter telling them they aren't "plugged in" to the community enough finally sunk in. :smilewink:

hi,

in comparsion to the x52-pro (in case you had/have it), would you say the CH stick feels:

- as "toyish" as the x52 pro

- more "toyish" then the x52 pro

- less "toyish" then the x52 pro, (but more toyish than cougar)

I have tried almost every controller option - X52 OK -- it works fine

Ch- Way too light and to much movement, but some like it-- a lot of buttons is a plus

Cougar straight-- a little stiff for heli flying, but feels good--like a real plane

Cougar with 31 cm extension-- well, never received it after buying it the 1st of Jan!

Cougar W/FSSB mod from Realsimulator- Works the best, the most precision you can have with the right settings!

I have a brand new Ch setup( fighterstick usb and pro throttle) -- 175$ shipped

Last night was the first time I touch the sim in 2 weeks, but I will get them for you. From memory I have x an y with with good deadzones- and curve on both as well. Since flying a heli is real sensitive , the deadzones are necessary for any unwanted flight control inputs.

I have both HOTAS. CH Fighterstick and ProThrottle with Rudder and I was thrilled with its capabilities build quality and smoothness. But then I bought a Thrustmaster Cougar and my CH Fighterstick together with ProThrottle are in the box. :)

It has nothing to do with better quality because it is not. It's just real! It's metal build and design is just so real that drives player to dive in the simulation with even greather enthusiasm. :joystick:

That's it. Nothin more.

Had a wee chuckle to myself when I read this.

I use the CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle and Pro Pedals with the addition of a new boxed Thrustmaster HOTAS sitting in my loft. At the end of the day it's all about personal preference and there is nobody more fastidious than the flight sim community.

HOTAS Cougar + UBER II NXT Mod and HALL Sensors > All other store bought options...

Unless you build a full blown cyclic/collective. Then I would have to say that would rock them all - that is, unless you managed to hack in either a CH Board or a Cougar board into the unit and add all the programmability and functionality.

But, I look at it like this - 750.00 for a modded Cougar, about 100.00 for modded pedals versus 1500.00 to 2000.00 for a full cyclic and collective.

It is just a matter of how much you are willing to spend really. My NXT Cougar gives me a lot of bang for the buck.

Should I check the CH boards to find a like post or are you guys simply perfect? I won't bother foraging through looking for any unhappy CH customers as by your measure I am sure they don't exist and all is always perfect for those who choose CH.

The Cougar is nowhere near the horror show that you (specifically you) try to imply over and over again on every board. You are far from informing any one by overstating every issue you can find long since resolved or not. The people I really feel badly for are the ones that take your advice.

Scare them good and don't let them touch it mate because it feels so much better than a CH and even after many years of use I can present you with any number of perfectly functioning stock Cougars.

Best advice I can give to others is to look for themselves and don't take my word for it and certainly do not take your word for it.

Truth is for under 10 bucks you can likely address any small issue a stock Cougar may have and enjoy its excellent ergonomics and all metal design for years and years to come.

I am sure I can count on you not to let any one know that, right?

let me tell you..

having a full blown cyclic and collective MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE..

for a short time, i was using a collective, cyclic and torque pedals, flying black shark was like second to none..

picture004zb7.jpg

w800.png

i had a friend who has never played any sim jump on my setup and manuvered the shark like a champ, though brought the gear on his first ever landing attempt.

though i have temporarliy shelved my helicopter setup for a fixed wing setup, (i.e. regular lever throttle on left hand and short joystick on right hand) the difference between this setup and the full blown helicopter setup was like night and day...

not only that i get confused with using the lever throttle as a collective, but man, moving the shark precisely on a short joystick takes some effort..

if you can get the full blown cyclic and collective setup..do it..

hannibal, is that a modified cougar for your cyclic? I need to do something similar for my A-10C pit, i'm very interested in more information about what you did there.

That looks like a modified CH Fighterstick to me. I love the hacked up AV8R! That is actually a really good idea for it. What are you using for the base unit of the collective?

PoleCat please. I scoured nothing to find that link. My hope is he's got his problem resolved and happily flying the virtual skies, to busy to report back. I visit Frugals from time to time, sure. That time, there it was, big as the sun in the sky, no scouring needed. I know there are those that don't care for CH Products, and that's okay. I can live with that, really, I can. I've quit, as you put it trying to present the Cougar as a "horror show". But, that being said, I feel the consumer should be inforrmed. That's all. Nothing wrong with that? Is there? I'm still waiting on the interchangeable handles as advertized on the box. ;)

I do like the sexy ergonomic feel of the Cougar, I do. By the way, the real stick/throttle isn't made of Zamak ;) Nor are they made of glass Filled Nylon. Or plastic for that matter. So the "real feel" doesn't fly for any PC joystick/HOTAS out there. Honestly, ya'll can fly whatever joystick/HOTAS you want, I could care less.

So, if somebody asks what stick/HOTAS I'll continue to recommend CH Products. Why? Well, it's really simple and comes down to a single word, quality. Quality product; Hardware as well as Software. Control Manager is one of the few (maybe only?) programming softwares for a HOTAS + system that can be used with Win98, ME, 2000, XP (32 and 64bit) Vista (All Versions) I've even read where people are using Windows 7 without problems. Quality product support. I doubt you'll find any arguement from anybody on any forum on that point.

+ = MFP, DT225 TrackBall

I'm not saying some don't have issues with either hardware or software. Some do. Most of them are as you probably know (when it comes to the interface between the controller/CM or Foxy/and the game) are unaware of how they work together, get frustrated and need something to blame. And since the joystick/HOTAS was the last thing plugged in, well guess what gets the blame. :(

In the end, pick what you want, after you've done your homework. If you decide to fly a Cougar, okay, CH, that's okay too (even better) :smilewink: after all, they're all just toys.

I just want to say for all of those reading, I do hope you do your research and make an informed decision. This ^^^^^ is what finally made be decide to buy CH gear. Those people make controllers for professional and industrial applications. I do get a little ticked off and I am very quick to inform when someone says a CH stick feels like a toy. Why, because its plastic? Its like when people don't understand that a sheet of plywood is actually stronger than just a piece of solid wood. Just because the CH is plastic, doesn't mean it isn't strong. I would hesitate to refer to these as toys:

What feels like a "real" fighter stick is subjective unless you've actually handled the real thing. I probably never will, so I would have to take people's word for it. I decided that I wouldn't worry so much about that and just go with a proven quality product from a company that makes heavy-duty controllers for professional applications.
