I'm getting about 5+ ms for random access times with this drive so (almost) no micro stutter for me.

great stuff. I'd like to hear more about these drives in practical use before I start buying components for my new rig.

Getting < .01 ms access on the SSD.

I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but seriously these SSDs really rock. And now I am thinking about getting another to raid them together. Check this video out, no it's not me doing the review but I am almost as excited as he is lol...

Below is a benchmark I ran with some reference HDs... The red is the SSD. Top is Read speeds and below is the access times.

AWESOME!! Just AWESOME!! (and I don't use that word to describe anything!)

Looks like with the proper setup the days of microstutters is about gone. :D

Was the operating system installed on the SSD? I am just wondering if the OS and game need to be installed on the SSD in order to see the benefits. It seems like at the very least, you would need to have your page file and game on the SSD.

Os isn't installed on it yet, waiting on my second drive so I can have a 64gb raid. Did put the page file on it though.

I'll post some more benchmarks when I get the rig set up... Should be receiving the 2nd drive on Tues.

Hi could you please test it with CrystalDiskMark? This is the score of the disk I've installed BS on:

--------------------------------------------------

CrystalDiskMark 2.2 © 2007-2008 hiyohiyo

Crystal Dew World : http://crystalmark.info/

--------------------------------------------------

Sequential Read : 92.918 MB/s

Sequential Write : 86.645 MB/s

Random Read 512KB : 64.437 MB/s

Random Write 512KB : 58.744 MB/s

Random Read 4KB : 1.627 MB/s

Random Write 4KB : 3.789 MB/s

Test Size : 100 MB

Date : 2009/02/25 18:15:31

Well this is with 1 32gb SSD, I was surprised the random write speeds were so low... Good thing the read speeds were superb! And thats the one that counts when playing games =D Wish the benchmark showed seek times. I'll run it again when I get my raid up.

I replied in another thread but have you had any of the issues that these guys are describing:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=20-220-342&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&SelectedRating=-1&PurchaseMark=&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&Keywords=(keywords)&Page=2

It seems that at the very least, putting the OS on the drive is a very bad idea with the random writes issue.

No, can't say I have had any issues with random locks or stuttors. From what I read it's an intel chipset issue that a new driver can fix? I don't know but I think I read something like that looking for Raid info. Currently I am having issues with my motherboard and setting up the raid with 2 of them. But it's not drive related, the raid controler is being goofy and I can't boot with it enabled. Thats off topic though :)

Bought another 32GB SLC SSD while I forgot this thread.

Are you still with *traditional* HDD? :pilotfly:

System: Core2Duo E8500, 4G ram, GTX260, SLC SSD, and Vista 32bit. LG W2600HP 26" LCD.

Controls : MSFFB2, CH Pro throttle, Saitek rudder, Saitek throttle quadrant, and TrackIR4

BS Setting : medium with visibility HIGH

TBH I find them totally unnecessary for desktops. You won't gain any noticable performance with games, but they are good for copy pasting large files and watching the numbers for your pleasure? Nah, I'd rather wait 5 mins more for that money.

SSD's for laptops on the other hand, are a must for future. Less power usage and durability(HDD is one of the most broken parts of laptops) makes them desirable.

well i bit the bullet, and sprung for intel X25E, not cheap, hehe.

put my swap file and DCS on the 32gb drive, installed the intel drivers.

As you can see by the specs below it's a new system built just for DCS, with a real fast HD anyway.

It makes a difference.

Load times are only just a bit faster, but gameplay has improved, and I have turned up my already high settings, e.g. vis now on high, and mimaps up a few notches in the graphics options.

My test has been some of the GOW chapter missions which formerly had hiccups and it sometimes got to the point where flight control was affected. I even had gone to point of reducing a few objects in some of those missions--- I think wags went a bit over kill in some of them.

In testing with the SSD, the hiccups are gone, fps will drop to high 20s but no effect on flight control--all this with higher graphics settings and as before, max rez.

at 419.00 it was a big hit I thought over for 10 days, but the slow downs do hit immersion pretty bad, so I thought OK DO IT.

I do not regret it.

TY toocool for the thread which brought SSDs to my attention.

Sequential Read : 271MB/s

Sequential Write : 214MB/s

with the crystaldisk thingy

my velolciraptor was running in the high 60's

on HD tune:

intel:

transfer avg: 226

access:0.0 (not a typo)

burst:157

WD velociraptor 300

transfer avg: 101

access: 7.3

burst: 194 (higher!)

so the thing does fly, and access is 7 times faster.

SSD is on my 'to get list'...

1-new graphics card

2-SSD

3-N/A

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

using WD Raptor 10,000rpm HDD

36 seconds

using OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD

21 seconds

I have 2 x intel 80gb ssd.....once you go SSD you will never want to go back!

I did have 2 x raptors in raid 0 as well but once you use ssd you dont really wanna put anything on....even the raptors.

Expensive = yes

worth it - best EVER part Ive bought for any computer.

What I do is make an image...... every 6 weeks..... reformat etc and replace...dont take too long.

I use 2 120gig ssds in raid 0, pc boots in 5 seconds, the longest thing is the bios, bios taks longer than the actual boot sequence :|

They are great things, but they are a pain in the ass to keep them upto speed, you constantly need to clean them, as GC and Trim doesnt really do shit.

Granted, when they are slow, they are still faster than normal harddrives, but they really are a pain to keep in tip top condition, once you get into the habit of keeping them in condiiton, it sucks you in like a cult and you will be forever checking the speed of them and then cleaning them etc.

Also as Conuk said, Trim dont work in raid and if you are unlucky to have an NForce chipset, it wont work on that either even if you only use a single drive. Nforce chipsets are the bane of an SSD's life, as you will be lucky if you can even flash the firmware of a ssd on a nforce mobo, and not forgetting that nf chipsets dont do ahci which is the best mode to have ur ssds running in.

All in all, for those who are planning on buying one or two, dont just jump into it, read up about them and also read up about if your mobo is compatible with them, because they can be hellish things to get running right.

But as Al pacino says in Donnie Brasco, " This is a Beautiful thing", once up and running correctly, they are beautiful things and your OS will never be the same again.

Oh, and did I say that they are great for loading lockon/dcs :D

I use 2 X 30 Gigs in Raid 0 and, just as Bumfire mentioned above, my machine boots up in about 15 seconds after it passes BIOS. The set up is so fast that I never notice when my McAfee scans for viruses, I never notice OS updates being installed, never have to wait for anything. The only problem I have is that I could not afford larger SSD's at the time.

Thermaltake Kandalf LCS | Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R | Etasis ET750 (850W Max) | i7-920 OC to 4.0 GHz | Gigabyte HD5850 | OCZ Gold 6GB DDR3 2000 | 2 X 30GB OCZ Vertex SSD in RAID 0 | ASUS VW266H 25.5" | LG Blue Ray 10X burner | TIR 5 | Saitek X-52 Pro | Logitech G930 | Saitek Pro flight rudder pedals | Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

same as Kuky, but i got the smaller 60gig version of the vertex 2

sure stuff loads faster but i swear blind gameplay improved dramatically,

and i am sure it's not just my imagination, someone pinch me :) for i must be dreaming,

can a ssd upgrade alone make such a difference, it seems so.

i split the 60gig into a partition for the OS win7 and another one for games

note: the install of win7 seemed slower than usual which had me worried

i honestly believe fc2 has never run smoother, and thats with the in game graphics pretty much cranked,

as my rig is not lacking in vid power with tri sli gtx280, and c2d e8600 clocked to 4ghz

looking around the cold pit when a mission loads i see no stuttering which in itself is amazing.

a fresh OS always seems to fly but the software installed on the ssd is virtually identical

to what is on the old hdd, just win7 x64, av, firewall, ts3 and flight sims

will have to go fly some more to be sure :D
