With all the impressive modelling the community produces, I was wondering if anyone can make a static runway object?  Say 200ft wide by 8000ft long, just plain black with dashed centerline.

We have numerous buildings, apron equipment, working TACAN object, etc.  With just a landable runway object, the possible user created air bases via template are substantial..  NAS Fallon (I believe we have a working IFLOS object to..),  Al Udeid, etc......

Could work, IF you can find a flat enough bit of ground to put it on.  I have never found any bits of ground that flat that didnt already have a runway or something else on it.

Yes, I recall that issue when I tried with the farp mats that we had around at one point.   I found I could get a reasonable landing surface and apron by stacking them on the more uneven areas.....but you could never taxi off, if you did there was no way back on.  I made a workable Fallon, but of course the AI would ignore it. Perhaps the same might work with two or even three "layers" of a runway object....

Some experimentation on existing objects gives food for thought.  Here are a number of the 90x1 "Hesco" objects arranged together to make a landing strip (I cant recall the mod right now...) setup in off map Syria, rough semi flat area.  All placed together they make a nice flat surface. Easily landable with rotary, I managed to do 2 touch and go's with  the Hornet.  So it may actually be possible, if the mod maker was to recreate the Hesco object with runway size dimensions...........we could be populating strips all over.

Going to see how it works with decent runway sized group for a full stop fixed wing landing.

Caucasus has plenty in Crimea and northern Turkey. Could be a decent starting point for player missions or an AI only base.

Hawkeye and I made some large concrete slabs that could be put together as bits of runways several years ago. We never found a long enough piece of land on the Caucasus map to place them in such a way as to create a new runway of sufficient length to operate aircraft safely, slabs either rode over each other or there were gaps in levels that could not be corrected.  Aircraft crashed every time, usually on the level changes.

Its a cool idea, but it really needs the ability to make the map/ground completely flat or some sort of Mod of sufficient length and depth to accommodate the undulations of the ground.  Sounds simple and like I said, it COULD be done, but we never got it to work in a meaningful way.

When N2 was released I spent hours trying mods that may have been the runway type mods crazyeddie’s on about? I can’t remember now what they were called but cheers to all of those for making the effort to build them. I found where Eastleigh airfield should be and was trying to fly a Spit in and out of there. I got a Mossie up a little ramp and tried to take off from one of these platforms but obviously didn’t make it very far. I did manage to take off out of the would-be Eastleigh in the Spit but from the grass, and it was bold and pretty dodgy. Landing I managed in a Mossie but smashed up the Spit time and time again trying to roll out there. Obviously, I had no ground crew to rearm, refuel or prime the Merlins but that’s another part of the package we need.

If we had Sommerfeld tracking or something similar we’d be laughing. If we could plant it and create ALGs with all the bits it’d be great. I don’t know how that’d work or how much work it would take but it’d be a great thing to add to the DCS World.

In short, ED, break out the diggers, pretty please. 🙂

I can say with some confidence that this idea can be accomplished.

All that is needed is a collision shell.

As @crazyeddie has said, the difficult part is finding the flat area.

Otherwise clipping occurs, and this ruins the effect.

You all thought you could not spawn aircraft upon the ocean?

I am here to tell you, this is now possible!

It is all about the collision shell.

However, I have already done something similar!

Try THAT with the F-18!

The best part?

They leave a wake upon taking off!

Who Knew?🤣

"Yeah, and though I work in the valley of Death, I will fear no Evil. For where there is one, there is always three. I preparest my aircraft to receive the Iron that will be delivered in the presence of my enemies. Thy ALCM and JDAM they comfort me. Power was given unto the aircrew to make peace upon the world by way of the sword. And when the call went out, Behold the "Sword of Stealth". And his name was Death. And Hell followed him. For the day of wrath has come and no mercy shall be given."

Thanks. Hawkeye!  I thought it was certainly a possibility.  Note from my above experiment with the rows of "90x1"  Hesco objects that have completely flat top surfaces.  I purposely put them on an uneven area, not too bad,  but very much indicative of the locations were the sat imagery shows airports, so I'm thinking that part is cancelled out by either the height or length or perhaps both of the static object......?

You realise anyone reading this will be compelled to try it out now.

I know I’m gonna 😆.

I remember reading through the mod thread a while back about it. There’s a float plane or two if I remember rightly? Well done for those.

For some reason the link above to the thread only showed up when I went to quote Hawkeyes post. I’m reading on an iPad so maybe that’s something to do with it? Bit odd but I got there somehow.

Now, where’s me Hornet… :pilotfly:
