Somnium VR1 Sept Headset Update

This headset is more for the people for whom this amount of money is not that significant, I would say.

well I took a gamble on the Ultimate edition. This is most money I've ever bet on what is just slightly better odds than a dice roll. A company with no track record selling a previously shady product that offers no returns and a sub par warranty.

This is a wise financial decision just like buying a project car is a wise financial decision AND just like the project car I expect to get beat up every step of the way for at least a few months. The pretty high initial cost then the high cost of all the **** it doesn't ship with that I need and then the high cost of trying to make it all fit and work right....its going to be a long road chasing the carrot but I'm gambling on its potential and my ability to access that potential.

To the OP if you could watch over this one for me...much thanks I know you would have probably got one yourself...

My signature is 4-5 years old, as I've been completed away from DCS (sim racing) for that long and haven't been on the forums or updated the forum signature to reflect the latest parts.

I have a 4090 now, 3090 before that, and will have a 5090 as soon as I can purchase one.

 

Edit: Updated the signature now  Once I get the 5090 I plan to do a total PC rebuild to add a 7900X3D CPU or whatever is the fastest things comes out between now and then.

They are saying July-August for those who ordered initially at launch, as of today they've said future orders (yet to be placed) will have a shipping timeframe of September to October.

Curious, with the Somnium being so expensive, why not just get the Varjo XR4?

More recent reviews I've seen were not much better and these kind of problems have been reported for their older headsets too. So it seems to be an issue that they don't really ever fix.

Currently owning the Aero. Not disappointed with it though. Ordered the Somnium VR1 anyway. The only thing that concerns me for DCS is the Somnium being front heavy, which can be an issue when dogfighting.... we will see....

The Aero was a lot better than the XR3 for simming. Their professional line is not targeted at this use case.

Went to the Somnium event in Prague on 7.12.24. Demoed VR1 w MR in a pretty cool F18 cockpit build. I own G2 but dont use it. 4k 48 OLED LG  suits me better. I am not a VR gure/expert by any means.  I was super impressed. There is no sweet spot. The whole damn thing is a sweet spot. I did not find it front heavy. It was super comfortable.  Little hot after 15 minutes but could have been just the room temperature and also I was told the fans that were running only at 20%.  Frames felt good, subjectively > 60. Caveat, fast map only.  Did some quick BFM type flying, checking a high six quick frequently and the headset felt pretty great.  Also super impressed with the company, quality of the build and their vision.

Thanks for the info. While I am waiting for my order to process, the only thing that worries me comparing the VR1 to the Aero is the front heaviness for dogfighting. Checking six and the headset will fall off is my biggest concern with it. Also I purchased without MR cameras as I hope to save weight.

Question for Tzigy ref Somnium event F18 demo.

I was wondering if the MFD displays they had in the cockpit build were active in their right or being feed with the actual DCS Data that allowed the Hardware Buttons and DCS MFD image to be viewed in MR together.

Disclaimer: I pretty much fly WW2>F4>A10.  F18 occnl case I landings...  pretty sure the DDIs were fully functional, not sure about the MPCD. The only button I touched was the HMD brightness knob,  I also reached and touched the hook and gear levers. The MR experience was amazing, i have to say, the transition between the physical and virtual world was impossible to notice in my brief 10-15 minutes session.

Thanks for your comments TZigy. First hand accounts are always valuable. As a current Aero owner I am not suffering at the moment but I am starting to think about the next steps and the VR1, XR4 and Crystal Super are all on my radar... with the VR1 probably being the most "real" at the moment.  

Tzigy... Did they happen to mention the PC specs they were using for the demo? Did you get to talk to others who were trying it?    ...Thanks
