True, but he's not going to shoot you from a mile away unless it's a heater fight (in which case you're dead the moment he can see your tailpipe). That's what supermaneuverability is really good for: moving the control zone out of the gun's WEZ.

That's what I meant. When you pull agressive AoA early, whilst he is too far away, you'll present your back in full format whilst he thanks you for the closure.

That's for sure. My point was that in a normal fight, you can shoot the bandit while remaining in his control zone, right on his tail. If you can slow down fast, the control zone moves further back - you can no longer remain in it and shoot accurately with guns at the same time. A dogfight is ultimately about shooting the enemy down, and not about hanging out on his six until someone runs out of gas. It's a chancy last ditch maneuver, but the mere possibility of high alpha maneuvers influences tactics by functioning as a deterrent of sorts.

For a peer match this work only if he made a mistake of closing in too fast.

Realizing that when someone has lead pursuit on you and an angle off your tail, they’re by definition closing distance on you. Plus by the nature of that aspect they’ll always have to pull a tighter turn than you will to stay in the zone. Ironically a correctly executed attack will involve being at a higher speed than the defender so you’re using that against them. Don’t reverse the turn until you see them cross your tail otherwise you just flew through their gunsight.

but it has a number of well known counters, too.

Right, they can counter that by going out of plane with a yo-yo or displacement roll. Then you can counter those too… now you’re dogfighting 😁

So, you're pretty much trapped then. You can hope for a mistake, or attempt an outrun, out climb, or out turn but it's likely futile. Could hope for a wingman to help. I guess all I can do is fly as erratically as possible without losing too much speed, ie making it as hard as possible for him to judge lead for his cannon, but that still leaves me open and slower for an IR missile shot.

After the first fight devolves into a two-circle fight, you’ll get an excellent idea of what the Su-27 pilot would be seeing…

With everything today being AI and drones and stuff. How about an AI controlled turret on the back. That would be a surprise to all those high alpha pests. 😜
