silverdevil Posted December 8, 2023 Posted December 8, 2023 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIR-2_Genie it was meant for the starfighter to use but there was a trapeze rail that was problematic. however the f-102 and f-106 could carry it internally. used to take out a squadron of bombers in one pop. sound safe... Dragon1-1 Posted December 9, 2023 Posted December 9, 2023 Safer than getting shot to pieces by their tail turrets, for sure. Remember that bombers of the era were hairy targets, and missiles weren't quite there yet. The AIR-2 was a good weapon for what it did, and certainly put a dent in the whole "the bomber will always get through" concept. Its only problem was that it could only be used in a nuclear war, but then, killing nuke armed bombers was the very idea behind it. F-102 couldn't carry it, BTW, not operationally. F-101, F-89 and the F-106 could, though.
Hiob Posted December 9, 2023 Author Posted December 9, 2023 Jeeze, guys! I just wanted to make a joke, not start a debate about nuclear warfare. "Muß ich denn jedes Mal, wenn ich sauge oder saugblase den Schlauchstecker in die Schlauchnut schieben?"
