For primarily a Hornet driver, is Nevada worth buying? No cyclical ops from the boat, right?

Also, a bit OT, but is the F4 Phantom going to be Carrier capable?

Nevada has no sea, so no carrier ops are possible. Heatblur's F-4 initial release is an E version, so no carrier capable either. Hopefully a sales success will trigger the addition of a Naval variant.

That's such a shame. The F-4 is ICONIC for Cyclical ops in the Vietnam era. All the great photos are of Naval carrier based Phantoms.

Sadly I'm going to pass on it then. And, tbh, I like my 4th gen jets 😄

Context on that photo?

I think most agree however, when thinking of the Phantom, especially the E variant, of Carrier Op's and Naval Aviation!

You can place the carrier in a lake if you want. Obviously it's not realistic - but it can be done.

However I have Nevada, and I might have a total of two hours flight time on it myself. I love carrier ops, and it doesn't lend itself to that. I've mostly seen it used more for a 'training map', but that's kind of expensive for a lot of people to have just for training (YMMV).

There are a few maps on the near horizon though that may work very well for carrier ops, so might be worth saving your money for one of those?

Nobody will agree as the E version is straight and only USAF! US Navy variants are A/B/J/N/S. Heatblur plans to do the Navy Phantom but it will be far into the future.

As for the NTTR map there is one Hornet DLC:

but you'll find many more free missions and campaigns in User Files, ex.:

There are also other campaigns, missions or dynamic campaign missions/servers, ex.:

which can be found here:

Think of Fallon NAS when flying from Nellis AFB. I see no reason why Navy guys and gals cannot enjoy Nevada. If you wanna follow real-world procedures in a plausible environment, there's no better map in DCS than Nevada/NTTR, lots of documents and charts available for that. (Maybe Mariannas also offers real-world procedures and charts, haven't checked.)

I found a lot of enjoyment on Nevada map last year after getting new fast storage so I could re install it. I own it since I pre-ordered the A-10C back in the day and I was still surprised about its quality high up. Low levels are not bad, although the vegetation lacks. Mountain tops are not up to date standards but for a tactical map experience with a lot of variations in geography it's a worth addition.

Hornet wise, it is decent for CAS but you have to be based on solid ground. Lots of dense urban areas along with open wide desert with mountains. You can do terrain masking due to the geography.

Some shots to show the map, although with slight color corrections, they are close enough to what you'll see while flying. Low level hurts a bit on the visuals but it is far from ugly. Performance is great.

Well, I wouldn't mind it if the E model could catch a wire with its tail hook, or if it could be spawned in to launch from a position hooked up to catapult.

I know it's not correct, but until such time as we get an F-4A/B/G/J/N/S Navy Phantom, IMHO, it would be slightly better than nothing.  At least with the gun disabled, the slats make it relatively close to the S series.

Besides they're already making USN paint schemes for it and it's only a matter of time until it shows up with RN K model or RAF M model paintjobs...

Edit: This is to say that, yhea, what I really wanna see is a correct USN/USMC Phantom but until then, because we're already going to be playing pretend, we may as well play pretend...

I´m a carrier ops guy and i love NTTR. I use it for all my training or testing. And you cannot put aircraft carriers in lakes (you even don´t have that option), as wrongly mentioned few posts before.

For me is a must have but of course this is subjective, depends on what are your needs and what do you expect.

Maybe check some YT videos with NTTR map to see if it is worthy for you.

About carrier ops: "The younger pilots are still quite capable of holding their heads forward against the forces. The older ones have been doing this too long and know better; sore necks make for poor sleep.'

IMHO absolutely a must have map.  I agree with the choice to freeze the map at a certain time frame.  It would be impossible to keep up with every change, every addition, etc.

I do wish that they would make efforts to fully finish it eventually even if it meant using existing objects and not making new ones.
