Very useful, thanks for the effort!

There's also RU-0439 Guba Gryaznaya Heliport, at 69°3′54″ N 33° 7′ 9″  / 15 ft though I'm not sure it's active.

Cheers, Holger

LOL

It may be active, but I doubt it is RU-0439 Guba Gryaznaya Heliport, and I bet it's moved on by now.

There is a helipad at those coordinates. Feel free to place a ship there to simulate that snapshot in time.  Not going to include that one as an official helipad.

Ha! Looked up RU-0439 or HCK0 and the coordinates are 69°03'54.7"N 33°17'29.8"E.

That ten minute longitude error will get you every time. LOL Will add it to the list! Thanks!

Looks to be an aviation museum location.

Sorry about that, bad copy & paste.

Three more in the Russian area:

Olenya Bay Naval Base, at 69.214897° 33.383395°

Bolshoye Ramozero Nuclear Storage Facility (?), at 68.233216° 33.869196° (I don't believe we've placed any buildings/structures there yet)

Border Guards station (?), at 69.498348° 30.180438°

Stupid question: does DCS have generic helipads for mission creators that can be embedded into the existing terrain, like other sims do?

Yes, for example visible or invisible helipads (named Farp here).

There also seems to be a smaller strip near Ostrovnoy (68°01'52"N, 39°32'02"E) which this describes as a helipad. See here for a satellite image (also note the closed "Orbita" satellite ground station immediately to its south).

DMS was included in my initial message (68°01'52"N, 39°32'02"E). Here's a link to a view from Google Earth.

Yandex Maps have dozens of helipads in that area, and I doubt all of them (especially the Russian ones) exist in Google's database:

There is no point for us to write down/screenshot all of this data for you. It would be easier for you to use YM to check anything of interest by yourself. I can assist you with changing YM's interface to English & satellite mode if needed.

It's called a community effort Minsky. Nobody is mandating participation. I appreciate your contribution. Is/are your Kneeboard page(s) finished yet? 😉

Now, what would be useful is an open source list of Russian ICAO identifiers ...

I've experienced that phenomenon at many locations.  I managed to drop several helipads around the desired location and then could get one to drag over to the spot I wanted. Very much a trial and error solution.

I didn't mean that you should slave away alone 🙂  I was referring to that particular Yandex link.

Since I don't know all the criterias for including / not including a helipad into the list, it would probably be much faster for you to have a peek on that Yandex map and pick whatever is worth picking - in your opinion. Instead of having someone else writing everything down, only to then check and reject half of that data for some valid, but not necessarily obvious reason.

Fair enough. If people want something included, I'll include it.  Kola is a big map. To expedite the process, the initial criteria was to provide a DMS LAT/LON and an image for initial screening placement.  Some helipads will not place on exact coordinates due to GIS errors from real world to DCS World.  As a compromise, I try to place the helipad in the nearest flat location that will allow the helipad to "lay flat" in DCS.

Ideal criteria:

- DMS coordinates

- Satellite Image

- ICAO or ATA identifier

- any other reference data you may be aware of like Approach Plates (Some helipads have IFR/VFR approaches)

For the record, I'm a fixed wing guy ... not a rotorhead 😉 , but I know many DCS users love their helicopters. Lately, we have a slew of helos releasing, (CH-47, OH-58, OH-6 Mod, etc), so this effort was for the helo community and mission planners as well for ORBX developers.

I'll eventually release a STM template file with this data "in the future" ...

Hello!
Nice effort, this is useful.

First, a trick for placement to work around "soft ground", use the almighty cow:

  • select static type animal
  • move the cow, she can go pretty much everywhere
  • select type back to helipad

I've put everything listed in this thread in a Static Template and checked Google Maps if it matches, Screenshots and Template attached.

There is also a helipad over the Bodo Nordland Hospital, but may be decommissioned in real world :  67°16'59.93"N  14°23'49.29"E

It's still there. Google maps has an old photo from before the upgraded helipad was built (for the new AW101 SAR birds).

Thanks everyone for all of the sources and ideas! I'm hoping to release a comprehensive STM Template file this weekend.  I'm still working on a revised map solution. Probably going to go with ICAO, Name, and DMS.  If ICAO is unknown, then nearest ciity name will be used.  To Ops: I knew DCS Cows would be good for something!  Sometimes editorial license must be taken. As you can see from the example below that I learned from trying to place a helipad for ESA_maligno, the Flat Earth Society does not always cooperate with DCS Terrains. LOL

Lower far right was the actual Lat/Lon placement of the anti-gravity helipad. I chose the dock as the final resting place. For the record, no cows were harmed during this FARP construction project.
