I will be buying this one. The flight model is outstanding. Not sure about the DRM thing but a sim this good deserves support.

Out

+1, Polecat - My thoughts exactly. We need to support the sim community. DRM sucks but you can't blame them for wanting to protect their product!

I believe the NA release is still set for this Wednesday (June 17th, 2009). I've never dealt with FSPilotShop before, so here's hoping that they ship things in a timely manner. :)

I want it :) Hope to see it in Poland on shelves soon!

Yeah, but if the DRM works in a way where it's an open question on whether I can start the app when I want to it can be however good it wants. I don't want to be forced to call the ISP support to ask them to reboot their serveras (again) to play an offline session. If it was a purely online game then it's my problem, but for offline... The whole point of "offline" is that you can do it "offline"... :P

I see your point and feel your pain. I used to be on an RF Wireless internet provider and it was up and down like a yo-yo.

Thankfully I moved and am now on a very stable 5mbit DSL line that I've no complaints about. I can certainly see your point about the always-on requirement for this particular DRM. It would be impossible to play, in your circumstances.

Hopefully the Rise Of Flight developers will realize the kind of problems this will cause for people and change their DRM to some sort of check-in method that reserves it for a week or two at a time, similar to how the dvd check was done with Flaming Cliffs. I would think this would make more sense from a business perspective as it could reduce support calls.

Just a thought and a prayer... :noexpression:

I suppose I've gotten used to draconian DRM schemes. I just hope that someday developers will get wise to the idea that only legit users are ever affected by them. Personally, I'm just cautiously stoked that Rise of Flight may actually be released soon!

You are mistaken if you think CP violators are unaffected by DRM.

Also until it literally demands control of your computer, I wouldn't call it draconian (but there can be varying degrees of annoying therein).

Well, okay, maybe draconian is overstating it for most DRM. Slightly. Perhaps "wildly irritating" is a better term. Then again, even needing the disc in the drive is pretty irritating for me. I suppose there's no perfect answer for piracy, but certainly the current strategy with DRM is not working all that well.

When I say pirates are unaffected by DRM, I'm thinking of a buddy of mine at work who likes to download games. He tells me that pretty much any game is available, often ahead of the retail release, complete with a crack that gets him around any installation limits or other copy protection. The way he talks about it, DRM is a non-issue, at least for him, the end user. The guys cracking the games may have more trouble, but it doesn't sound like they have a LOT of trouble, if you know what I mean.

Sorry, didn't mean to go OT on this thread. Yay for Rise of Flight!!

At risk of further derailing this thread - and I really don't want to turn it into a DRM discussion, but I'll mention that the whole DRM experience really varies from game to game. It worked out for ED in this case.

In some cases it's a lot of trouble ;) The general case is that a game can be easily cracked/whatevered ... but it is the general case and subject to exceptions.

Actually, yeah, I'd say it did. My Black Shark installation is the direct-downloaded English version, and I'm told there's DRM attached, but it's all in the background as far as I'm concerned. That's what I love about digital distribution: no disc to insert. Other than the initial activation, which was smooth like silk, I just click and play.

That said, and trying my best to stay on topic, after reading about the neat-o stuff in the Rise of Flight box, most notably a large map, I guess I'll have to buy a physical copy of that game. Neat-o stuff in game boxes is the only real downside to digital distribution, but that's becoming more of a rarity anyway...

I can't ever get any of these high fidelity sim's any other way mostly except digital download. I can download it on the day of release, if I order the thing will come 4 weeks later and that's unacceptable.

I'd love to have a hard copy, that map is great, but if it means I have to wait then for the MOST part I'm not willing hehehe.

:pilotfly:

Digital Downloaded Russian AND english black shark and really happy with it. Digital downloaded ARMA 2 as well lol.

I buy all these sims and don't have the time to play them...

I envy you, and I massively miss the 24mbps line I had a couple years ago before I moved out into total bush. (The local "town" is 200 people...) And I wish I could make by brother stop taunting me about the 100/100 fiber he has into his apartment. The bloody bastard. :P

But, alas, net connection alone is not enough to make me want to move.

Knowing myself though I probably will stay (slightly) upset for a few weeks or a month and then I will be unable to resist getting it anyhow. I haven't played a good WW1 sim since Knights of the Sky and Dawn Patrol, and something will have to be done about that.

I've got a few copies on the way. . .if we don't support the very few flight sims that come out, especially those that have some real soul, we all lose.

Agreed, you have a few copies huh? Nice, where did you buy from? When are you expecting it?

24mbps would be heaven! I thought 5 was amazing when I got it, as before it I only had 2 mbps but it generally ran around 700kbps. I've never heard of anything faster than 10 mbps in this Region. I guess we are behind the times.

100/100 fiber!?!? What a tease! :megalol:

'tis a shame ROF was delayed a bit more, but it'll be worth the wait I think. I too haven't played a good WWI Flight Sim, since RedBaron on my ol' 486DX.
