I flew the F-18 today and noticed that the GBUs weren't hitting.

You can (could?) set the laser code on the F-18 during flight, and if you set it accordingly on the GBU and the pod, it will follow the laser (otherwise CODE flashes).

But that doesn't work anymore. As soon as you change the laser code (on the GBU and pod) in the air, all the GBUs miss. You can only use this code if you set a different code for the bomb in the menu while you're on the ground using the new function (on the rear arm).

Is that intentional, or has a new bug been built in? If changing the laser codes on the GBUs in the air doesn't work anyway, then the function would have to be removed.

You can just try it yourself... load the plane, take off, set the code to something other than 1688, and nothing will hit.

Hi,

you need to set the code for the GBU on the ground using the rearm menu and the new fusing options. You can not change the code on the bomb once you are in the air, just like real life.

thank you

Why ED didn't remove the option to set another GBU code in flight via STRS Page if it doesn't work anymore (and if it doesn't exist in real life, now that there is the possibility to do this at ME/rearm)?

You don't even get a warning of Laser CODE Mismatch because the STRS page shows the changed Lasercode but the bomb still has the value assigned on the ground.
So it's definitely not "correct as is"!

Furthermore, now that you can no longer change the laser code in flight on any of the aircraft, it is definitely time to work on the JTAC so that you can tell him the laser code that the GBUs carried have, just like in real life.

IRL you can't change laser codes for most of the bombs (AFAIK you can for GBU-54 and Mav E). Codes are set on bombs by ground crew using a screwdriver 🙂

nullSettings on Stores Page are for pilot's information, so he don't have to remember which bomb is on which code.

Yes, ED JTAC needs reworking.

It's absolutely correct as is. Paveways are not a smart weapon.

All you are doing in the SMS is telling the jet what the bombs are set to so it knows when to yell at you if you have the codes on the pod set differently to the selected weapon

Not at my PC this weekend, but just out of curiosity:

Is the laser code in the STORES page automatically set to whatever one has set in the rearm menu (or ME)? Or is it set at the lame old 1688 and you have to set it yourself if you want to have it look nicely?

From a cold start i don't think they are. I could be wrong.

Many thanks to everyone for the detailed explanations, I think I understand it now.
Thanks to @Foka for the picture, now I finally know what it looks like in real life.

So the only things missing are:

  1. Changes in the manual to show things as they are now.
  2. A page on the kneeboard where the weapons and the laser code(s) are dynamically displayed (for each station?)
  3. Regarding the JTAC: The check-in should look like this in the future: "I have GBU-12 Lasercode 1XXX" and the JTAC sets it accordingly.

Edit: Ah and yes the laser code is correctly transferred from the ME to the SMS even with a cold start. I did not test the laser code changes during the rearm (I forgot to try)

You are incorrect 🙂.  At least if you load the bomb's in the Ground Crew menu after cold starting it will automatically put the code set into the Stores page info.  Not sure if I've checked that on a mission editor loaded loadout though 🤔.
