MBot Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) To me it seems that the cockpit engine sounds are not tuned in line with the rest of DCS. The Phantom is considerably louder than any other module I fly. When it was released, with my standard sound volume settings, I had at first difficulty to understand my teammates on discord and the high engine sound level started to actually hurt after a while. I had to re-tune my sound levels for the Phantom. While this was a short-term solution, it should not be necessary to re-tune my sound settings each time I fly a different aircraft. The Phantom sound volumes should be aligned with the rest of DCS. Here is a quick comparison. All aircraft with the same sound settings at full engine power. The Phantom is very loud. Xtorris Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) If you want to use it, I attached a zip file with modified SDEF files. I reduced the cockpit engine, ICS, and wind sounds by 30%. Extract the zip file and place the Sound folder, in your saved games folder. Sounds.zip Edited July 17, 2024 by Xtorris

Q3ark Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I’ve read accounts of pilots saying that the F4 cockpit was very loud and uncomfortable when compared to other aircraft of the time, it is a pain in the sim when you can’t even hear the radio though.
G.J.S Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 It’s pretty accurate, a badly adjusted (or not serviced in awhile) helmet would only exacerbate it. - - - The only real mystery in life is just why kamikaze pilots wore helmets? - - -
Wrcknbckr Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 For me it's not so much the loudness but the fact it sounds like loud white noise. Same noise as the Tomcat's bleed air (which I switch off almost always). Unfortunately here there is nothing to switch off...

=475FG= Dawger Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 I find DCS improperly models engine and wind noise. Wind noise should completely drown out engine noise at high speed. Wind noise is also a direct clue to airspeed and is absent in DCS. I find engine noise is louder than wind noise in DCS Individual sliders for wind and engine would be welcome additions to overcome this 3
Talisman_VR Posted July 18, 2024 Posted July 18, 2024 (edited) I struggle to hear/understand Jester sometimes even though I have the intercom turned up to max and hear like helmet activated. Please developers can you provide some increased volume allowance for Jester on the intercom so I can turn him up a bit more. Happy landings, Talisman Edited July 18, 2024 by Talisman_VR

I’m using speakers for aircraft sound and the small headset speakers of my G2 for communication and cockpit warnings etc, such as RWR sounds. It works very well and I have zero problems understanding Jester - if anything, I find him a bit too loud compared to the other cockpit sounds Edited July 23, 2024 by Raven (Elysian Angel) Typo Spoiler Ryzen 9 5900X | 64GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600 | Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super | ASUS ROG Strix X570-E GAMING | Samsung 990Pro 2TB + 960Pro 1TB NMVe | VR: Varjo Aero Pro Flight Trainer Puma | VIRPIL MT-50CM2 grip on VPForce Rhino with Z-curve extension | Virpil CM3 throttle | Virpil CP2 + 3 | FSSB R3L | VPC Rotor TCS Plus base with SharKa-50 grip | Everything mounted on Monstertech MFC-1 | TPR rudder pedals OpenXR | PD 1.0 | 100% render resolution | DCS graphics settings

The haptics are brilliant and very immersive. Just need more volume on the intercom for Jester. Not a big ask I would have thought as folks always have the option to turn down the intercom volume as required. Just need more top end volume on the intercom. Plus I find that Jester in cockpit radio effects could do with some improvement as he doesn't sound much like he is on a real radio intercom. Talisman_VR Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 I have now juggled the many audio volume settings and can at last hear and understand Jester. My solution was found when I turned down the 'volume in-cockpit' setting from 100 to 60, with my 'helmet volume' set to 100. (World is set to 90 and overall volume set to 80) Hope this might help others too. P.S. Now need to turn down the Phantom AOA warning volume in the cockpit as it is ear splitting, lol. And, Jester still doesn't sound much like he is on a real radio intercom, so I would like to have better 'radio effect' for Jester voice if the developers would be so kind. Happy landings, Talisman
