radioactix Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I don't know how long you're doing 3D graphics, but I get much better results with Blender (it's open-source, so you can download it from blender.org for free). There are 2 pictures attached showing a WIP of a jet I've done in 2008. As you can see, i get softer forms and I tried to only use one object for the structure of the jet.
joey45 Posted May 25, 2009 Author Posted May 25, 2009 (edited) not long.. Softimage Mod Tool is also free.. I couldn't get my head around blender... EDIT: model sort of buggerged up had to start again... if i had/have better blueprints it would be better. joey45 Posted May 30, 2009 Author Posted May 30, 2009 (edited) I have some Qs for you modders??? 1- I see from the screenies that you leave out the canopy.. Do you modle it then delete it of not? 2- how do you smooth out the model? I'll add some more later... oakdown Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 (edited) I have some Qs for you modders??? 1- I see from the screenies that you leave out the canopy.. Do you modle it then delete it of not? 2- how do you smooth out the model? I'll add some more later... I'll have a go at question number 2, but take my answer with a grain of salt as i'm not a professional modeler. smoothness is mainly achieved with good modeling technique, which means your mesh flows appropriately, vertices terminate properly and connect properly. With applications such as 3ds max, one is able to put a "turbosmooth" or "meshsmooth" (more intensive) modifier on their model which increases the mesh density... however... it's not wise to slap that on your model, and then "convert -->poly/nurbs/etc" your mesh to this new higher density because that increases your workload - as obviously now you have many more vertices to fudge with however sometimes it helps or is required. the normal procedure would be to keep that event procedural, so that you can "toggle" the meshsmooth on and off, but always return to a less dense model to tweak. (same as using symmetry so you don't have to model the whole thing :P) that being said there are some problems with just slapping a meshsmooth on your model if you require really exact straight lines (the cockpit windows on the ka50 would be a good example), if you don't provide the extra mesh density around these items the meshsmooth will give your object a "melted" look. and the windows (as an example) would become more round. usually you can overcome this by spacing a repetitive mesh very close to the object that you want to maintain it's shape. a little confusing to explain. overtime one's model can get a little overworked, and vertices don't align etc etc down a fuselage this can look a little bumpy, it's important to learn all the tools available in programs such as 3ds max, because at the sub-object level it is possible to align vertices according to x y or z coordinates which speeds up manually placing each one in space - which has the fudge factor. another useful tool is constrain - when you can move vertices but constrain them to an edge etc. in any case a GREAT tutorial on solid object modeling is digital tutors automotive modeling in 3ds max. I know you don't use that app, but just the technique the guy uses could be used in any application. You will see him make good use of symmetry modifiers, as well as turbo smooth and mesh smooth, while adding line/mesh density to maintain structural shape. I hope that helps! samuel150892 Posted June 12, 2009 Posted June 12, 2009 (edited) Ok here is my car model so far. Aint don alot of work to it for a while. There isnt a tutorial for the bonnet of the car, so i had to try and do that myself. Still some work to do on it. Just trying to complete the car, then add details to it at a later date. I think it is turning out rather good compared to before. :D Edited June 12, 2009 by samuel150892

sobek Posted June 24, 2009 Posted June 24, 2009 Hey just stumbled over this thread, i've been trying to get into 3D modeling and blender lately by doing a J-35. I'm not very far yet and i'm pretty slow because i have to learn things on the go, but i think i'm getting there. :book::) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Ovenmit Posted July 13, 2009 Posted July 13, 2009 I never released then to the public though... I was never 100% happy with the texture work... specifically the transparent mag on the G-36. DCS team can have them for their upcoming FPS module for blackshark ;) Win 10pro x64 | i5 2500 | 16GB RAM | GTX1060 6GB | Logitech G940 | Tir5 + TC [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
