leroy1964 Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Start on "Real" they said :megalol: Well I thought I was getting the hang of flying this chopper on real, 'but' on decent trying to slow down, the spinning starts and I mean 'you spin me right round baby like a, well you know the verse, sadly so do I' anyway one the spinning started I couldn't stop it and I spun all the way into the ground. Seems I have the take off, flying straight and slow whilst in flight, but landing on the other hand. Oh well back to the drawing board. Don't mind me, just venting:lol: Cheers
Boulund Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I guess you've experienced the famed Vortex Ring State where you get trapped in your own downwards-flowing air, crippling your lift and thus you begin to fall. leafer Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 I'm four days into the sim and I've managed to hover and land -- provided that I landed immediately after taking off to about 10 feet off the ground. A little bouncy 99% of the time but it felt good. Now, If I'm transitioning from forward flight into landing -- say -- from several hundred feet...it ain't pretty and never where I would have liked to crashed. I mean landed... :D ED have been taking my money since 1995. :P
leroy1964 Posted May 17, 2009 Author Posted May 17, 2009 Yep that sounds right I guess you've experienced the famed Vortex Ring State where you get trapped in your own downwards-flowing air, crippling your lift and thus you begin to fall. Yep that's it  What a horrible feeling, I am yelling "talk to me goose"! :joystick:

Panzertard Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 (edited) hehe leroy - Love your humoristic venting. Sorry I gave you the advice, but I think I added "watch the training videos" ;) As the man above here said, vortex, descent > 3m/s. Bad for you, m'kay :D Hints: for the tutorial videos: First time, watch it (one of them) Second time, test if you remembers it - by mentally being one step ahead of the tutor. Third time - dare to ESC->Take Control before the teaching starts? Can you do it while the instructor talks? Fourth time - go to #2 if you still are unsure what happened. Thats roughly how I approched the training sessions. It doesn't teach you everything, but quite a lot of the basic to get going :) Edited May 17, 2009 by Panzertard The mind is like a parachute. 159th_Viper Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 Vortex Ring at Altitude is minor - Just Pitch the Nose down and then some and you'll recover. Fun while it lasts though.........:D It's All Good! Press ctrl-enter to get the controls map... use this to tell wehther you have accidentaly trimed out your rudder....whn travelly forward at speed, the effect can be minimal, but when slowing down, suddenly even a little bit of rudder trim can set you off in a spin.
born2thrill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 hehe did the same today and recorded: http://s468.photobucket.com/albums/rr47/born2thrill/?action=view¤t=oopsy.flv leroy1964 said "Start on "Real" they said" lol when i first flew il2 it was ofline for about 3 months in arcade mode...when i jump onto full switch server it took me another 3 to iron out all my flaws :D so i learn a little lasson for this game! born2thrill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Ive only been playing a few days but the thing that helped me was reading 159th_Vipers post, every time i hit the vortex i pulled back and full throttled it to try to (flare) get out of it!

That's the opposite of what you should do when caught in VRS. The proper procedure is to lower collective and immediately pitch down to gain speed. Unless you're in a hover, in which case flaring back will achieve the same effect as pitching forward. Remember your goal is just to get out of the vertical column of turbulent air. Of course, the downside of flaring back from a hover is that then you'll end up going backwards, which is inadvisable for obvious reasons. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
born2thrill Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 oops sorry slug88 i shoulda used quote from earlier post Vortex Ring at Altitude is minor - Just Pitch the Nose down and then some and you'll recover. Fun while it lasts though.........:D It's All Good! I ment id usualy do the flare thing until id read vipers post  Im getting there slowly but surely though :) p.s thanks for advice though..its all welcome

Ferris Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Hmm, I kept getting caught in the Vortex Ring all the time, until I watched the training video on Transitions. If going into a hover from forwards flight, always ensure that your rate of descent never exceeds 3m/s. Simple as that. Once I knew that, and eagle-eye the descent-meter all the time, I've never plummeted out of the sky, unless it's from a AA missile. I apply that same rule to descending during a hover too. Never faster than 3m/s. It may or may not be the combat tested way to go about it, but this little tip has served me well thus far. Destroying everything for a better tomorrow!
leroy1964 Posted May 20, 2009 Author Posted May 20, 2009 no luck there at lest you can punch out.... I have tried that "E+LCTRL" no luck?:helpsmilie: Cheers
nomdeplume Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 I have tried that "E+LCTRL" no luck? You have to press it three times to eject. If you're doing a manual startup, also make sure you actually enable the ejection systems. Otherwise you'll be really disappointed when you need them. ;)
