Hello folks,

It has been quite a while but last I remember, I made an introduction of myself, way back when I was in Iraq. Checking back in and wondering if Chief Brad and Matt are still around.

Upon return from Iraq, my job had been quite hectic, got reassigned to a line unit, did lots of troubleshooting on Apaches. Recently though got the good news that I was selected to attend Warrant Officer Flight Training. So... another one in the making. Can't wait to put the real life experience into good use and assist DCS efforts.

See you around.

Have you read the book 'APACHE' by Ed Macy??? its a good read.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

"Me, the 13th Duke of Wybourne, here on the ED forums at 3 'o' clock in the morning, with my reputation. Are they mad.."

upgraded you engines yet on your D's.... ? to our standered???

The engines on the D's have been upgraded from 701C's to 701D's, with a 104shp increase from 1880shp to 1994shp.

But that is quite beside the point. The engines are derated because they are too powerful for the transmission, which is identical on the UK Apache and US Apache. The only time that extra power is available for the UK Apache is during takeoff.

The primary reason for the choice of engine for the UK Apache is that no other UK helicopters use GE engines, but both the NH-90 and the Merlin use the RTM322, not to mention the fact that Rolls-Royce and Turbomeca are much bigger names for turbine engines in Europe than in the US.

In other words, no, US Apaches will not be "upgrading" to the same engines as UK Apaches.

I just got the Apache News 2009 by Boeing, and was told it talks about the changes in the Blk III. I heard, so this is not from me, that we would get an engine upgrade, and also upgrades to the NGBs, and transmissions. I will take a look at the magazine sometime soon.

No, A-10C is next, what happens after that is still unclear at the moment.

Oh ok, I remember seeing some development on the Apache side of the house, maybe the wait wouldn't be that long after all. I won't be getting out of flight school until 2012 sometime :)

Yep, the Block III should be the upgrade from 701C to 701D engines. Newer NGB's and main gearbox are to allow it to take more power from the engines, as they are currently the weaker link. I could be wrong of course, I'm running out of -64D contacts.

Looked at it @ Barnes & Noble, haven't picked it up yet. However I was told that the author mentions that us yankies fly with different tactics compared to them. No surprise there.

Yeah, he talks to the differences in terms of target loiter...the Brits tend to get to altitude (2000 ft ?) from their IP and "wheel" over the target , whereas, apparently the US will NOE all the way in to hit-and-run ?

It is a very good book IMHO .. I've also recently read "Apache Dawn" by Damien Lewis, also covering UK Apache operations out of Bastion / Helmand, and , though not as in depth as Ed Macy's, still has some interesting tid bits.

Welcome back, Bushmaster.

While you are here - can you give us your opinion, as a (real) helicopter pilot, how realistic is DCS:Black Shark game (if you play it, of course) compared to the "real thing".
