Any good and easy clue in how to configure F-18 AIR radar to achieve cruise missiles detection?

Tried 5 times with no success...

Thx in advance.

Same, couldn't find them on my radar.

Spoiler

Then spent the rest of my gas circling at 80 degrees from B/E, 30 miles and angels 12, as advised, waiting for the Patriot to down them, but didn't hear back on Chainsaw so eventually diverted back to base.

It would be useful if there was an option to skip to the next trigger point in case the previous one doesn't get activated and you end up flying 'in the dark'

I found them mostly by pure luck. I did get down to the altitudes they were reported at so the radar was more level with their altitude, got a sniff, and homed in on it. I only just learned about it, but next time I'm going to set up Bullseye as an A/A waypoint and that should help with the SA as well in terms of where the hell they are. If you stay high when the quails are reported low, the radar might have trouble picking them up out of the clutter or they may be below your beam.

The problem with the triggers was that once you got to certain range, the SPACE BAR (I/R) option to report finding them disappeared. I fixed this for next patch. Also, if you don't find them, you will eventually told to hold high and the SAMs at Rovaniemi spring into action so the mission will progress anyway.

Well, that is what I did, waited for the Patriots to take them down while orbiting. Then the story continued, telling me to push to TAC 1 on AUX and CHAINSAW on PRI and nothing happened after switching correctly. After realizing that it is too quiet I checked the preset for CHAINSAW on my UFC and the channels list on the kneeboard, turns out the preset CH10 was tuned to 321.5 but the Kneeboard said something else. Eventually, I had to RTB shortly after reaching joker fuel, thus letting me not finish the mission completely.

Have tried this mission twice and had problems both times.

First time, after the patriot engages the remaining cruise missiles the triggers just stopped. I was very low on fuel so I made a beeline back to Base but nothing ever happened again trigger-wise so the mission failed. Only thing I can think of is maybe I was outside of the position they assigned me to deconflict but the patriot engagement was complete so I would at least think the mission would continue after that.

Second time, I think my flight was able to destroy all the cruise missiles because I visually lost them, and the position updates stopped updating. But all triggers stopped and the mission wouldn't continue. I can't think of anything I did wrong on this one.

Hi!

I have a similar problem on this mission, the difference is that I manage to destroy all cruise missiles but my wingman gone stupid, flow away from me with no destination, the AWACS stop talking and no more radio chatting from anybody.

Same here. After the quails are shot down..told to go tac on aux and chainsaw on pri...then nothing. No more communication.

Thanks guys, we will check this. Just to be sure - you don't have Easy Comms turned ON, do you? If there is a bug, it will be fixed for the next patch. Hope you enjoy the rest of the campaign!

Same issues. For radar I used TWS Hi interleave 2 band and 20 degree scan. Picked the lead group up. Got 2 Quails, one locked and the other mad dog launch. Might just try spamming all missiles next time. Slick got none. I chased after the remaining missiles using F10 directions but only got fleeting glimpses on radar. Eventually got signal to hold high. Wasn't sure if it was the 80 radial from Rovaniemi or Base. Assumed Base and assumed altitude base plus 5 meant Angels 20. Changed to Buzz on Pri and tac on Aux and nothing!. No mods enabled and easy comms off.

Loving the scenery and atmosphere. In VR it is outstanding. Keep up the great work!

If you read the briefing (or check your kneeboard) it will tell you that for this mission "Base altitude for today is set to 10,000 feet".  So base + 5 would be 15,000 ft not 20,000.  Worth paying attention to the details in the briefings because base altitude changes throughout the missions.

Cheers mate I must have forgotten that bit. Put it down to advancing old age LOL. I will write 1,000 lines  "I must pay more attention to the brief!".

I only pointed out paying attention to the brief because in this campaign (more than many) it's easy to miss things that will cause you challenges in the mission if you're not reading it carefully.  Nothing wrong with that fact, and personally I like it, but seems to be tripping up a number of people trying to fly Arctic Thunder.

What @rob10 says.. briefing is the key. Unfortunately in the scripted campaigns there is only so many things we as mission creators can do or rely on to detect what the player's actions are - and therefore it is crucial to follow the flight plan etc. etc. Also, keeping the procedures - engaging only when you are cleared hot (by JTAC, Chainsaw, flight lead - but someone has to do that!) etc.

There is no shame in flying the same mission twice, on the second run it is much more enjoyable (I found it even flying my own campaigns, not to mention missions from some other good 3rd party devs) 🙂

I would like to point out that I did, read the brief carefully, but did not pick up on the base altitude. This is a new term to me, as, from my memory it has not appeared or been used in any of your, or other campaign creators literature or briefings in the past. I am not a military pilot so I am not familiar with this usage. I have flown DCS since it was LOMAC and have not come across it before. It may be a term used in multiplayer scenarios, but I have only played single-player missions and campaigns apart from one brief foray.

No one has answered my other point about which Tacan radial I was to hold on. Is it Rovaniemi on 124X, Base on 122X, or a bearing from Bullseye (WP1)? I have read the briefing carefully a number of times but cannot find anything that confirms it.

The main reason I enjoy campaigns with such detailed mission scenarios and briefings is to learn more about military flying. I have been flying flight sims both civilian and military since the early days of MSFS. I understand the need to read briefings and never skip them. I enjoy learning new skills and incorporating these into mission flying. Sometimes they get a bit rusty as there are a lot of platforms and modules to learn. I do not object to re-flying missions and I do not expect to ace every mission. As you point out, half the fun is honing skills and perfecting techniques once you figure out gaps in my knowledge or skill base.

PS. Please don't read this as a rant.

My recollection is that it's a radial from the Bullseye. I think that's clear when you get the radio message while you're in the mission (but not from the briefing). But haven't reflown the mission yet so could be wrong.

Just finished this one, Chainsaw vectors you to 040 I stayed on that until new orders. 051 was the next, so I flew that, tagged the Blackjack and then after I got the new tasking, I believe it was 055 which goes down to 7000, I followed that and proceeded to work on getting my grand slam, when my wingman sent an Aim-9x right up my tail pipe 🤣

Redid the mission and yeah, same procedure. This ended in success with 2 crashing on final for some reason and losing me 4 points 😒
