Currently, there are a lot of modules/terrains that will increase in price once they release in 1.0, e.g. Iraq, Afghanistan and Kola.

I am wondering if we get a notice a few weeks before the 1.0 of a product releases, in the likes of "Last possibility to grab the XXX terrain at the discounted EA price". Or do they simply surprise release and the price goes up instantly?

Most modules are in EA for years.

That doesn't answer my question, does it?

In the past, ED has never given prior notice.

That sounds plausible. Thank you, Rudel! I'm going to buy the Kola map soon then, I have a hunch it is about to release into 1.0.

Typically it is at least 2-3 years (EA), during which time the product is developed. Sometimes it can also take longer.

As for the Kola map, you won't regret it, great map, even at its current stage!

No. I should probably added that you don't have to worry if you plan to get it the next few years.

A better question would be if they ever give notice when preorders cease.

it’s unlikely, the South Atlantic Map is from the same developer (tough different publisher) and it is still in EA.

No, they have no incentive for it. All discounts are for you to take the chance of. If you didn't - too bad - pay more if you still value the product.

Exactly my point!
While we usually get hints on when there's a patch and if the module will be released with the patch. Last chance!

That's debatable 😉

I for one don't consider it even remotely ready for regular use... Though that might depend on individual preferences/expectations.
The advantage of pre-ordering (or just buying before full release) is indeed the reduced price, provided you are confident the final product will be up to your individual expectations.
The Kola Peninsula is an exceedingly beautiful area (in real life), and given the reputation of the developer I'm reasonably confident it will get there - eventually. For me it's just not there yet...

That sounds convincing but is only partially true. There is a myriad of examples of Early Access games over on Steam that announced a price increase/end of Early Access beforehand so people who follow the product (but haven't bought it yet) have a last chance of buying the Early Access version.

And those developers don't have an incentive either. Except - wait for it - keeping the customer base satisfied and prevent backlash due to a sudden price increase which some customers might find unreasonable. It also boosts sales since the 1.0 release might be a huge disappointment so it might be better to reel in the customers beforehand and gain some traction on the product before the 1.0 release.

This is just an observation how Early Access works outside of the DCS microcosm.

@all: Thank you for giving me, a mere aspirants, some insight into how things like Early Access are handled!

@Sunbather I see your point. I don't use Steam for DCS. And I know there are issues with Steam "rules" for pricing. There have been posts from moderators in this forum regarding "last chance to pre-purchase, while modules have left Early Access without any notification at all. Which is another discussion on its own.
Thumb rule. If you read the forums daily, there will be hints when a DLC is entering the SIM in the upcoming patch, and pre-orders will be closed. A product will usually stay in Early Access for at least 2-3 years. (I believe Syria was less, and I think the new maps will be less). A module will not ever be on sale in the year after it was released.
Cheers!

"No incentive" is too strong. There is some incentive, but perhaps not enough to justify an announcement. An announcement could push some buyers who have held off buying because they are undecided at the lower price, or are waiting to see how the module evolves, or just because they haven't gotten around to it, to make a purchase. Some of those buyers might not buy at all at the higher price. So an announcement of a planned price increase could increase overall sales revenue in theory. There is a tradeoff to consider. Lots of businesses pre-announce price increases as an inducement to buy now.
