I was very addiment that I will wait for the RTX 6090 if and when it appears in a few years time .

So there I was just taking a look around the internet.

Then there is was a chance to  buy a RTX 5090 FE what do I do...pass  or click BUY!

Well my finder twitched and I placed an order.

So will be looking to sell my RTX 4090 FE at some stage.

Now I need to buy a new PSU, CPU, Memory, CASE, Motherboard, AIO, M.2 ,. fans etc......what have I done?

Did I need to buy one when I already have a RTC4090 FE?

No one should tell you how to spend your own money.

That said, I honestly can't see any point in paying the absolutely ridiculous prices of any RTX 5090, especially if already owning a fully funcional RTX 4090... :dunno:

In such case, to upgrade from 4090 to 5090, and for what is gaming/simming "leisure use", the perf.advantage versus purchase cost is really, really bad.

So bad that the only reasonable conclusion seems to be to wait for the 60 series (6090, 6080), which will be on a whole new architecture (50 Series really wasn't) based on TSMC's 3nm process (50 series still uses 5nm process like 40 series did) and, supposedly, also faster GDDR7X memory, which should (speculated) provide the jump in performance that all of the 50 series failed to provide.

And that's ignoring the melting power connectors and cables design issues discussion, already worrisome on the 4090 before, has been turned up to eleven on the 5090...

I was planing on waiting for the 60 Series but it was about 2 am and I saw the FE pop up as in stock so I hit the tit and brought it.

Now I am stuffed for Mother Board etc...

Lesson do not surf computer sites late at night.

When you rank all GPUs by performance, the 4090 still comes in second place behind the 5090 which has a 20-30% uplift depending on the application.
If the goal is maximizing performance, no matter the cost. Well. Do you NEED it? Probably not.

I bought a 5090, but sold my 4090 for a lot of money, after almost 3 years of use.

The performance increase in VR is definitely noticeable, worth the upgrade.

Interesting, in % terms what would you say you gained?

I have the feeling (and the hope), that the 4090 will be the successor to the holy 1080TI in regards to longevity,

I did it too, after hearing 'the news' that NVidia were going to cut back production by 30% "to stop prices falling too low". I also switched to the 9800X3D and yes, there is a significant improvement in VR.

It'd better last, given the 4090's already ludicrous retail price (at the time when it was still available). I paid 700 euro back in the day for my brand spanking new 1080Ti.
4090s used to go for 2000-2500 euro, now the 5090 sells for 2600-3200. While they are superb cards for DCS, their price is too bonkers to even consider: just 1 component that is more expensive than everything else (CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, case, AIO, NVMe drive) combined? I'll pass, thanks...

Exactly!

Upgrading every 5 years with a very expensive card (whatever relative level this means at the time) that lasts(!) is reasonable imho.
Uprgrading every (other) year for a latest luxury card is bonkers for most regular people. (Still their choice though, I'm not hitting on anybody who does/did is. Just for me personally, it is bonkers)

Very expensive = 1200-1500 euro and that should last at least 4-5 years. A 3000+ euro card MIGHT be worth considering if it lasts 8-10 years.
We'll see with 60-series: nVidia better get their act together and provide 6080 with at least 24GB of VRAM...

20% I have an AMD 9800X3D and 64GB of DDR5 RAM,

Can fly over Berlin, London or Paris at 90fps in VR, everything is very smooth even at low altitude.

Settings are very high, great graphics but Terrain shadows off, which makes for very smooth flying at low altitude over dense forests or big cities

While I totally agree with you on the sentiment, I admit that "expensive" lays in the eye of the beholder.

Obviously, but let's just say my monthly income didn't rise as much as the prices for top tier graphics cards have in the last decade - and I'd think that counts for most people 😉

Thing is when I sell my 4090 it will go towards paying for my 5090 so the 5090 will end up costing me less than 5080.

I think you would benefit from Nvidia introducing subscription model. E.g. 2000 EUR per year. Once they release a new version you ship old one back to them, they destroy it, and you get a new one.

It's a win/win for both you and Nvidia, they benefit from:

- having you constantly as customer

- getting rid of the card you could potentially sell to another user

Sure, NVidia 'have you constantly as a customer'. That's what is known as a monopoly. And destroying working video cards isn't exactly environmentally friendly...
