dooom Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Hi all, As i continue to learn this great sim i thought i would offer up a thread for noobs like myself whom are intimidated at where to start, what's necessary to learn and generally where to find what they need. While this board and community offers itself up as a fantastic starting point for all noobs to the sim, it can still be daunting venturing into the search function if you don't even know what you should be looking for. Please add to this list as you deem necessary - bearing in mind the need to frame it all for a noob. I just cobbled together a few great resources i used to familiarize myself with the sim. Its a good path to follow to learn - much better than sequestering yourself with the massive manual. I authored none of this - only brought it together. 1. Preflight Start-up procedures: Video: Leading Edge Training: http://http1.files.eagle.ru/dcs/video/L ... ew&lang=en PDF Check List: Print out for desktop http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?a ... 1243939893 **Note - you can skip this all by simply initiating an "auto" sequence with leftWin+Home... 1a: TRIM... Doesn't work at all like aircraft. very important to understand that it is a button held down anytime you move a control surface... Trim video: http://http1.files.eagle.ru/dcs/video/t ... im&lang=en 2. Get in the air and kill stuff! "DCS for Dummies": Awesome mission file to fly solo and teach you the very basics of Navigation, Engaging enemy and using Weapons. http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/t ... ost2626185 PDF of Tutorial: http://home.ifi.uio.no/~oysteint/test/B ... torial.pdf Mission file: http://freenet-homepage.de/parabellum/tutorial01.miz Download mission file, drop it in: Program Files(x86)/Eagle dynamics/Ka-50/Missions **Note Internet Explorer might try to change the extension to a .zip file when you download ... just change teh extension to .miz from .zip before you drop it in the missions folder - DO NOT UNPACK.. 3. 10 Rules to Live By: Very quick read after you do the mission above... good to familiarize yourself with tactics before trying a campaign or real missions solo/with others. http://realandsimulatedwars.yolasite.co ... primer.php 4. Advanced Systems: There is plenty of meat on the bone in the sim so its pretty daunting to know where to start. these two videos teach the basics of two important systems to use in multiplayer: the ABRIS and the DATALINK ABRIS: http://http1.files.eagle.ru/dcs/video/A ... 9b&lang=en DATALINK: http://http1.files.eagle.ru/dcs/video/D ... e0&lang=en 5. Ancillary considerations: The following is a good SimHQ review which breaks down the intimidation of depth with a study sim like this... have a read and learn the nuts and bolts of what you absolutely should now. It also covers some additional considerations i learned such as pedals vs rudders, fuel cutoff for fire extinguishing etc. http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_421a.html 3 ASUS Tuf Gaming Pro x570 / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X @ 3.8 / XFX Radeon 6900 XT / 64 GB DDR4 3200 "This was not in the Manual I did not read", cried the Noob" - BMBM, WWIIOL

EvilBivol-1 Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 (edited) IMHO, our forum has by now overflowed with questions, answers, guides, tips and hints about Black Shark to the point where there is too much reading material for a newbie to easily access. Maybe a better idea at this point would be to open an independent website to maintain a streamlined newbie guide? Perhaps the ED Wiki page? bfeld Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 @dooom: nice list, I didn't know that tactics thing (3) @EvilBivol-1: Your absolutely right in my opinion. If there's some spare time at work and I read a bit in the forums, sometimes really interesting links are posted. Most of the time I think: I read about the XYZ tutorial in three threads, it'll be easy to find. Back at home, I don't no what to search for. Some sort of wiki would be great. Same applies for news etc: I spotted several links to the screenshots for A10-C, others to information in the russian part of the board, but I would never find them again easily.
Feuerfalke Posted September 18, 2009 Posted September 18, 2009 Indeed - good point. dooom Posted September 30, 2009 Author Posted September 30, 2009 wow this sadly seems to be getting buried again - i have had to refer a few new folks to the thread - any way to keep it visible so it can grow as a list ? GGTharos Posted September 30, 2009 Posted September 30, 2009 I'll reiterate EB's suggestion to move such a list to the ED Wiki. We don't want a page full of stickies. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
