vrv Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 I have had Black Shark for about three or four months now and the same with LOMAC. I started out with nothing but a Logitech Attack 3 and my mouse to look around. Needless to say it was difficult but I found that I loved flying and it became my hobby. No more than a hobby a love affair, even though it sounds cliche, its true. I bought a X-52 HOTAS in early October and upped the anty. It was brilliant having the ability to have the important controls at my finger tips, being able to scroll when targeting objects on the ground, and most important controlling the collective / throttle. My TrackIR 4 Pro came today and within seconds I had it set up. I loaded up Black Shark, took my time starting the old b**** I mean beautiful, loving and caring baby, while looking around effortlessly. Once I was in the air it was mind boggling. My grandfather, who trained to be a Huey pilot in Vietnam (ended up being a spook), was in town and came by for a look. He was amazed that technology could do this. When I told him about TrackIR he scoffed and called b.s but once he saw it I could see that old sparkle in his eyes. I've spent the past hour just flying around looking at stuff. The immersion is ten fold. I thought you guys were over exaggerating about TrackIR but I was wrong. I will definitely be flying DCS more since I won't have to use the joystick hat 1 to look around :joystick: :D Of course my desk is now full of papers and wires so its even more of a mess. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] EtherealN: I will promptly perform a sex change and offer my hand in marriage to whomever
104th_Crunch Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Very cool. Glad you're enjoying your new investments!
lawndartleo Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Simming without TrackIR makes about as much sense as sitting in a stripclub, blind folded.
Panzertard Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 .... +8 With 6dof cockpits - I mean - who in their right minds will go back to any other mechnisms of emulating a cockpit again after this? Not anyone sane I know. :D It's when you put that TrackIR on your head and take your bird for a spin in the 6dof environment with the rest of the controls at your fingertips you understand how you'll finally be much more proficient at getting shot out of the skies ;) The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning
G3 Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 great feedback about the trackir, like a skydive, it has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. & getting old people on sims is top stuff, they love it too. we have our share around here.
MrReynolds Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 Totally a personal point of view, but I would rather fly with trackIR and no joystick (keys) than the other way round. :music_whistling:

Might go the same whit TrackIR. Though i think it has an fairly hefty price tag. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)
EtherealN Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 If you have a webcamera you can investigate Cachya (cheap) and FreeTrack (free). The latter requires that you remove the IR filter on the camera and build yourself an IR LED rig though, but the pricetags are a lot lower than TrackIR. Myself though, I prefered dishing up the money for the TrackIR since I then get a complete solution, with support, that has direct support built into the simulator. I played simulators for an ungodly time with just using mouse for view (one of like two things my left hand is good for is controlling view with mouse at this point. :P ) and for a long time had the idea that this was "good enough". But with DCS:BS and the 6DOF advance I felt I had to try it out, bought myself a TrackIR and I wouldn't go back.
