Take it one step at a time, first learn to get a feeling for flying and possibly, trimming. Then move on to systems (i would start with navigation, then maybe weapons, somewhere in between you can try to learn the startup procedure ad lib). Once you got that down, you're ready to move to missions or maybe a campaign.

There's also some sort of weekly(?) multiplayer rookie-meet where one can learn a lot. You should, however, at least be familiar with flying to be able to enjoy multiplayer.

What sobek said - especially on taking things one step at a time. It may be boring to wait for days or maybe a week until you start actually killing stuff, but it avoids a lot of frustration down the line since you'll have had better chances at learning things properly.

I myself spent a couple days just sight-seeing in the mountains as flight training before I went over to combat, and it felt really good when I started to notice the absense of things like blown tyres after landing and suchlike. ;)

Some probably will not agree whit me but start flying online as soon as you dare to.

On a lot of servers there are quite some people wanting to give you help on how to fly, and they can see on what point your messing up your landing for example.

If you see one of the STP servers online whit an "freeflight" mission make sure to take a look there.

(i spent about 3 hours offline in BS and months of flying online, and for starters, just use the cheat start up until you can fly, left windows key + Home key)

Don't forget to download patch 1.01 (a b or c doesnt really matter all that much)

Then, if your getting low FPS (in your opinion, but i think getting 15 is minimum to aim for) take a look here.

Guess that's just about it for the moment.

ps, don't forget the search function of the forum is your friend:smilewink:

***EDIT***

I forgot the following;

An common mistake is that people use the throttle from there joystick as just that, a throttle.

Make sure you assign the throttle axis of your joystick to the COLLECTIVE channel in game and

clear it if necessary from the engine throttle levers.

In real helicopters you pull collective up to climb and push it down to descent, how you set it up

is your choice but just letting you know.

Remember to have patience while training! You won't master the Shark with 20hrs of flying(amount is depending on your experience with serious flight sims).

RTFM and training missions. I also printed out the start up procedures, then made a simple mission that starts with the BS cold on the tarmac. Did that many times over before moving on to any other training.

Chapter 12 of the manual mate.

It's about 20 pages long. Do all of it the first few times. Some will not be needed but you should learn it all. The diary video on startup is a streamlined version that custs out some system tests.

You should not be skipping the system tests.

Do it right the first few times, then you can start skipping, and I'll start asking the devs if they can implement some random instrumentation failure ;)

The cockpit trainer by War Hawks is very handy as well. If you do a search in DCS for "War Hawks" it will be one of the first returns.

Personally I found the startup procedure in the manual really confusing. People's startup checklists and the training missions really helped me.
