schkorpio Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Hi all, I'm looking to get a new pc, as mine is 3+ years old now - and basically I would like to get something that can run BlackShark at around a constant 60fps (or higher) without going to crazy with water cooling or overclocking etc (budget is no too strict, but don't really want to into all that stuff, i've done it before and i usually find you don't get a lot of bang for buck) - what should I be looking at?:book: Thanks in advance :) Sponsored by: http://www.ozpc.com.au

Feuerfalke Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 Did you check the hardware-forum on this board? There are some very good discussions and suggestions about new PCs and hardware with different pricing. Burnerski Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 The first thing I would buy are 3 monitors, Dell has a good deal on 23" monitors with displayport. The next is a ATI 5870. Then see how much money you have left and go from there. Triple monitors in portrait mode will blow you away. Burner
mayu22 Posted March 21, 2010 Posted March 21, 2010 I would suggest to look for a good motherboard with 32nm processor compatibility so later if a new 32nm processor comes out you can just throw it in and it will work, future proofing, i7 930 are great processors they come with the new legendary D0 stepping which over clocks the CPU really well. With the Corsair H50 water cooler you can get a good over clock. For the graphic card I would suggest to wait until March's end the Nvidia new FERMI graphic cards will be out so the prices of ATI may drop. Plus then you can decide which one is better suited for you. Corsair RAM is really good for 180.00 USD you can get 6.0GB DDR3 @ 1600Mhz memory. Hopefully it helps. Ramstein Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 how many people are spending more than $400 on a video card and do combat flight sims as a hobby? Nvidia GTX480 (Fermi, not yet released) or ATI Radeon 5970 seem to both over $600 and maybe almost $800. I wil have to make the big decision and those top of the line video cards sure have my attention. Pilotasso Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 If your not an extreme FPS gamer than I advise against a top of the line GFX, rather an mid end card. Bet on a stronger CPU insteaD. .
Konovalov Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I guess one's purchase of a video card should be principally based on his or her monitor size and what resolution it is along with the type of games they play. Obviously flight sims generally are more dependent on CPU speed and pure Mhz. I have been a long time Nvidia user but ATI's Eyevinity technology really impresses me. Flight sims with 3 monitors in portrait mode would rock. I'm running FC2 at 1920 x 1280 with sliders on High for textures, scenes and everything else. I'm getting fps way over 100 with clouds everywhere. I"ll admit it surprised me. I don't have a state of the art machine. It's probably above average: i7 920 quad core @ 3.7MHz, Noctua super air cooler for i7 chips, 6 gigs of 1600MHz RAM, 750watt PSU, GTX 285, 1.5TB HD(Extreme Speed), Win 7, 64 Bit. So, a system like this might work for you. No need to go overboard. No need for water cooling, thousand watt PSUs and all that. It's a waste of money.

But it's easily within the top 5 video cards performance-wise.
emenance Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 (edited) yeah i would call that state of the art. I wouldnt call a 1000 watt PSU a waste of money. Depending on the manufacture that is what you need if you want to build a PC the right way, in respect to the video card you plan on using. http://game.amd.com/us-en/amdgame_components.aspx?cat=3 Edited March 29, 2010 by emenance Asus P8Z68-V GEN3/ 2500k 4.4ghz / Corsair 64gb SSD Cache / Corsair 8g 1600 ddr3 / 2 x 320gb RE3 Raid 0 /Corsair 950w/ Zotac 560TI AMP 1gb / Zalman GS1200 case /G940/

Mugenjin Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 1000W PSU is pretty much overboard for a single video card (HD 5850). Even a 750W PSU for a HD 5850 crossfire system is more than enough to stay on the safe side. Granted that you buy brand name PSU's, not that LC Power crap. That's for ATI cards though, since the new Nvidia Fermis have a really high power consumption. I wouldn't recommend the 480 anyhow, if you're not into gpgpu.

ThePlainsman Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I must apologize for the pointless nature of this post I'm making. That's the most awesome underclocking I've ever seen. :D Not for a 920. A 920 stock runs at 2.66GHz. For a 975 it would be. Besides, I have no idea how to overclock. The manufacturer did it at my request. The overclocking is covered by the warranty because the manufacturer did it. I think my system is only a bit above average. There are much faster gaming rigs out there. But this was all I could afford.:(

pyates2104 Posted March 31, 2010 Posted March 31, 2010 No need to break the bank I've just built a new rig for under 1000 Euros. Frame rates are up in the 40's: I have over clocked the i5-750 to 3.8 Ghz and its holding steady at 50C with full load on all 4 cores. (with a good cooler.) I did clock at 4.2 Ghz but this was getting too hot at full load. Old GPU Nvidia 8800 GTX is being used in the new system. Flight sims are CPU intensive and this is usually the bottleneck if you have a reasonable GPU, so a clocked i5 750 is the way to go.
