diveplane Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 (edited) definitly agreed . i just purchased a book that i'm waiting to receive . it's the memories of an Amazon indian chief whom tribe lives in harmony for ages with nature and the way of living is threatened by a dam project which threatens to submerge it all . little OT but still fits. see how the natives tried to rebel , fend off the whiteman settlers, they visioned and seen the nightmare even back then in there t pee tents. one example being. once the rifle and gun powder was invented , whiteman almost wiped out buffalo herds , that the native american indians depended on. see why they faught to try protect there native lands. today its still the same game played out , but on a bigger scale ,corp industries driven by greed glutton selfish arrogance. masses of people below this command pecking order , are brain washed forced and controlled. all about power and control by a few elite men. gulf oil spill mess, caused by this glutton greed. think this is earth finally striking back on us, and the harm we have caused to this planet. some media brain washes us , by saying its ok its only a little spill, everything will be fine. personally i threw the square tv out the window eons ago ........> out it goes , use the internet for my source and news. Sorry but I disagree. This is not a matter of stop doing military spending and divert the money elsewhere. There is enough money, but the oil interests are putting up the inertia for the transition over to cleaner energies. they will when it is convenient for the market and interests. Which isnt for now. It will take a while before oil production costs rises enough for this. BTW, military spending is not needed just for war but to respond to many types of other crisis. In another note, my country for example had a record of 80% rate of energy spending from renewable sources this winter, though thanx to a rigorous winter and colder than usual temperatures. :) Nuclear fusion is going to take 50 more years to become commercialy avaiable but its coming. IMHO will be a major civilizational transition. Edited June 22, 2010 by Pilotasso .

winz Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Nuclear fusion doesn't produce nuclear waste the way fission does it. Fusion is the same process that powers life on earth - proces going on in stars. Afaik the only waste in ITER (experimental fusion reactor) is Helium, as a result of deuterium and tritium fusion. It's one the cleanest energy sources. Also, in terms of waste disposal in fision reactor - technology has advanced in this field as well. Much more waste then before can be processed for another usage. Pilotasso Posted June 22, 2010 Posted June 22, 2010 Right. 1) he's talking about fusion not fission, which is totaly different process. To my knowledge only one experimental reactor exists. ;) Soon there will be one, being built in France that's going to actually produce energy. 10 times more than it spends. It will run for decades for testing. This is a major milestone for clean and abundant energy. Unfortunately the wait will be long before we see them fusion reactors widespread over the planet. here: http://www.iter.org/ .
mikoyan Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 I'm sorry Pro-Obama people but this is what I think: What makes me really mad is that it took 41 days for the president to start asking who's ass to kick; seriously what a lack of love for his country, if it were me I would have kick some asses the day after; What a lack of leadership. ok ok the president can't go down there and stop the leak; but why let this bp people keep working when they clearly have shown their incapability to solve the issue. Isn't this country filled with brilliant scientist and engineers? Let then work for their country!

What can we expect when government officials own big part of the oil business, I just don't see commitment on the leaders of this country to make this country the great country its founders ambition. It is painful to watch even though I'm not a citizen (just a resident here)

sobek Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 (edited) Afaik the only waste in ITER (experimental fusion reactor) is Helium, as a result of deuterium and tritium fusion. It's one the cleanest energy sources. No offense, but you know wrong. :) The intense hard neutron radiation caused by the fusion 'pollutes' the reactor walls, making them radioactive. This is of course much less of a problem than with fission, but still, fusion produces radioactive waste that has to be disposed of every now and then. Currently, production of tritium produces nuclear waste as well but it is expected that future tokamak projects will create their own tritium. There is also way more than one reactor atm. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokamak#Currently_in_operation Edited June 23, 2010 by sobek Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Yes there is nuclear waste, but as science progresses, with fusion there is the possibility to reduce the half life of the waste produced to manageable times(in the order of hundreds of years instead of thousands). The amount is also way less than with fission. Regarding safety, reactors require conditions for the fusion to work that the fusion reaction alone can not keep up. The plasma has to be contained by massive electromagnetic fields or the reaction stops in an instant. Therefore with fusion, runaways and core meltdowns like Chernobyl or Three Mile Island are utterly unthinkable. Edited June 23, 2010 by sobek Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.
