Read some posts that the image quality of the ATI cards (x800) is better than fo example the 6600GT or 6800GT, but in some card test the 6600GT performs very wel in Lockon considering the price of that card, planning on buying the 6600GT, but if someone has a better idea i like to here that

The reviews that I have seen regarding the 6600GT have been very good, nice little card. Lots of potential there.

My advice is to go for the one that your budget will let you. If you can afford the 6800GT then by all means get it. If not then the 6600GT is a great card to purchase.

I myself was going for the 6800 Ultra but they had none in the store and while ordering it the GT caught my eye. I want my products yesterday so that is why I have this. And considering the speed that I can O/C it to I am very happy.

I went from a 9800pro to a 6800 vanilla and preferred the 9800 pro. Image quality was better with the ATI and FPS is about the same. In defense of the 6800, I think I'm cpu limited with my current rig. I'm using an AMD 2500+ Mobile OC'ed to 2.4Ghz.

If you want the best bang for your cash, go for the X800XL, especially the HIS one. Cost $100 less than its competitors for much of the same performance.

I'm very satified with my ATI X800XT Platinum, good FPS rate and eye candy!

When I upgraded last August I went back to nVidia after using an ATi 9800 Pro for a few years, I'm happy with the 6800 Ultra OC I have now.

Can someone with the ATI RADEON™ X850 XT PCI Express 256MB DDR3 give me an estimate of what fps are you getting with max out settings (that includes water, mirrors, and reflection)? Please?

I have an the following system:

ATI Radeaon X850 XT PCI Express 256MB GDDR3 Platinum edition

Asus AN8 SLI Deluxe

AMD Athalon64 3500+

1 GB Corsair TwinX RAM

Running with 4x AA and 4x AF and the following ingame setting:

LOMAC_setup.jpg

You will notice that I have not maxed everything out, and I didnt use cockpit mirrors or reflections. The reason for this is that typically I am moving too fast and much too busy to notice full shadows, heat blare, or cockpit reflections.

When I start the Su-27 quickstart I am getting 70fps right at the paused position sitting in the cockpit. I decided to fly low over the nearest city and I get about 25fps:

Thanks Maulkin for the info. But damn...this makes me wonder what pc out there could actually handle Lock On with max out settings on everything and still keep it at a reasonable price.

You should find that you can get a better frame rate and performance if you increase your resolution. These graphics cards don't seem to like the lower resolutions. I still have a 9600xt and i get better fps etc at 1280*1024 then i do at 1024*768

I am happy with my EVGA 6800GT, however, I am CPU limited at this time! I hope Eagle will code the 1.2 for dual core processors!

Agreed, at least with faster ATI cards. My 9800XT ran faster at 1280x1024 than 1024x768. As for the OP, I would say get ATI. I went from 9800XT to 6800GT OC and though the card is plenty fast, and I love the Digital Vibrance feature, I don't think I will ever get used to the crappy AA; at least crappy compared to my ATI card.

If I wanted to upgrade my GFX (wich at the time cannot afford to) I would get the x800 pro. I dont think an extra 3fps with the 6800GT would be the reason to choose it over the x800. And the ATI card has better image quality.

I say x800pro because I simply will never pay the premium price for the extra pipelines, the top cards are priced exponentialy higher.

I noticed a distinct image quality jump when I went from my last G-force to my current card, i dont believe they changed that issue with the newer cards too.

I used to have Nvidia cards, but they suck at AA and the 6800 would probably blow up my PSU (OEM, never to trust, and my voltage is at 11.8-11.9V instead of 12'ish wich isnt a good starter for higher loads )

God knows I would love to, but then I would run into the dreaded 'missing clouds' bug:

(see on the left side of river there are clouds with shadows, but on right side just shadows and no clouds)

WhereAreTheClouds.jpg

Only thing that fixes it is to fly at 1024x768. I first saw this back when I was using a 9800 Pro (which is what I was using when I took the screen shot). Apparently this is caused on only ATI cards. I guess I should test it again using the new system but I read somewhere it still does it even on my new board. Would prefer to get rid of AA & AF and simply pump the resolution up....

Ill test it tonight to see if this bug still exists and get back to you. I know I still get the other vid bug where terrain at a distance will get these strange vertical bars....but that bug seems to be intermittant and takes time to start up.

EDIT: tested the clouds with my new system @ 1280x1024 and I was able to easily duplicate it. Too bad because it looks awesome even with AA and AF disabled, but got pretty much the same framerate.
