Robin_Hood Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 (edited) Hey guys, I remember seeing a video in which a fighter plane (maybe F/A-18 ), HUD view, maybe at a Red Flag, was trying to lock a Sidewinder onto a big bastard like a B-52 or such, which would keep on flaring like crazy, and the fighter jock wouldn't get a decent lock. All the seeker would do was locking alternatively here and there on flares. I can't seem to find it now - must have tried almost every possible search I could think of, here and on Google. Any clues ? Please tell me I'm not insane and I haven't dreamed this video :helpsmilie: Edited June 20, 2010 by Robin_Hood 2nd French Fighter Squadron
Avilator Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I seem to remember this as well. It was a B-52, and it must have been a two-seat fighter, because the pilot said into the intercom something along the lines "he's putting out flares like a ...................." (fill in the blank yourself;)) As to where to find it, no idea. I only respond to that little mechanical voice that says "Terrain! Terrain! Pull Up! Pull Up!" bumfire Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 (edited) "G'damn it wont keep a lock" gunzo ftw :D there is another video of a F15 from Oregan ANG or was it f15s from Washington ??? i cant exactly recall, long time since I seen the vid, they were training with phantom drones ( what a waste ) and the f15 fires a heater and the phantom releases like 100 flares and the heater does some crazy moves, like 90o angles and gets spoofed by the flares and the f15 pilots cant believe it. If I find it again I will post it if no one else beats me to it, it has the song radar love playing in the background. 4.05 Edited June 20, 2010 by bumfire
Peyoteros Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Exactly, whats the big deal in not being able to hold IR lock ... I'd use the cannon to cut one wing at the time, then the tail, then chop fuselage like a carrot... "Eagle Dynamics" - simulating human madness since 1991 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] ۞ ۞

After you cut the wings off, I presume you would be making passes at the burning hulk on the ground?:D Edit: Or would you be fast enough to get it before it fell? Yes but a guns attack on a radar laid tail gun equipped aircraft is not something to take on lightly.

Well in this case I once would prefer 900+ of 20mm ) btw: Does anybody know why there are "just" 150 rounds inside the russian cannon? RIPTIDE Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 btw: Does anybody know why there are "just" 150 rounds inside the russian cannon? IIRC there is a different philiosophy at work. NATO/US cannons are designed to have higher fire rate but less accurate but you get a nice spread. Whereas W.PACT/Russian philosophy prefers lower rate of fire but more accurate gun. :) Both have their own merits. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Yes, I see: 1500–1800 rounds/min I knew this rate before but if you calculate it for 150 rounds.... but comparing it to the M61 vulcan with its 6000/6600 rpm, it really is just slow [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Waiting to build a F/A-18C home-pit... ex - Swiss Air Force Pilatus PC-21 Ground Crew SFM? SFJackBauer Posted June 23, 2010 Posted June 23, 2010 Buffs dont have rear guns any more and havent had for years, so gunzo = easy kill :) You miss the point. Russian Tu-95 bombers also have (or had) autocannon in the rear. Since that video is from training, and the B-52 was playing OPFOR, the pilot doesn't want to get into the bomber guns envelope just like he would do when intercepting a Tu-95. In the heat of the battle, I wouldn't even bother to check visually if these things have their tail gun installed or not... :)
