A little light relief: 1.1 racing challenge.

Recommended Posts

1:32 (first attempt with whole plane :p)

Oh, I see. Only ten seconds faster than my 10th-ish attempt. I think I may have just gone off this idea in a big way! :-)

PS Hang on...

You came to a stop at about 1:40. <phew!> Three seconds faster I can live with. That gives me something to aim for :-)

I also discovered that you can scrape a cable with your canopy, you'll get then all kinds of failures, but no visible damage :P

And you can fly between the cables and the tower (awesome collision detection in 1.1)

What is the best strategy for the first bend (after the first 2 towers, where you have a straight where u fly at 700 kph when in full AB)?

I tried both going fast, pulling hard and slowing down to 600 kph, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Andrew, you made me an addict.

BTW, why not make the same course with the su-25T? That would certainly be entertaining. But you'll have to stretch the start/finish section a bit, because of the longer landing and takeoff roll.

No idea :-) There's got to be a balance somewhere between speed and manoeuvrability. I guess finding it's the challenge! :-)

Heh. It is fun isn't it. "I'll just try that *one* more time".

why not make the same course with the su-25T?

I think the course would have to be smaller or we'd get bored between pilons ;-) But obviously, with the AFM racing with the 25T could be nice on the right course. Something with a little more horsepower seemed like a better place to start though :-)

i got 1min 46sec.... =(

will have to try again =)

[mr. T mode] I pity the fool! [/mr. T mode]

My hands are starting to shake, grrr, need to fly another lap....

I once would have toutched down at 1.26, but then I clipped my wing and crashed :(

And I often hit the tower on the last bend, and sometimes I fly inbetween the cables and thisk: "Wow, lomac finally has good collision detection" and then forget about the last tower.

I tried flying a similar course (with stretched start/finish area) on the su-25t, and it really blows, as you can't over AoA your plane too much (and enter the spiral of death).

Maybe the su25t should get a more speed oriented track with a few mean bends (like the German racetrack).

Too bad we don't have where we can fly under (yes there are bridges, but we can't place them, hence the term "fixed fixed objects")

Well, I guess I suck with the Sue because on my first 5 attempts last night I couldn't get under 1:55.

But thank you, Andrew, for making a fun little course here. Can't wait to get home and give it a few more shots tonight. :)

Let's hope someone can do it at 1.30.

I think that's possible when you fly between the cables, that's what I do, and usually blow it on the last tower by clipping it with my tail or cockpit :(

I once came up on the finish at 1.15, but crashed then.

Andrew, with your premission, I would like to present this racing mission featuring the su-25 (not the 25t because it's too sluggish). It's based on your su-27 track, but is a little bit stretched because of the su-25.

I don't have a time, bacause after 12 trys i kept crashing or losing my vertical stab :p

Let's hope this track will become "official"

Andrew, with your premission

You don't need my permission for anything :-) I only locked the original file so nobody would be tempted to move the pilons around and end up with incompatible times.

Hopefully I'll have some time to fly tomorrow, I need to work on my time as well! Then there's the downhill slalom course to design. Have you seen how steep some of those mountains are? :-D

I'm still not sure I fancy 25T racing though. The 25 is a more agile, faster aircraft, and still has the AFM. The lack of HUD might make height monitoring more tricky, but as long as people stick roughly under pilon height that's good enough.

PS Glad a few others are enjoying it too.

I did use the su-25, not the 25t.

My lap time is 2.30 (second try with whole plane :p)

the su is more challanging bacause of the landing speed, you'll have to time your approach.

Yet 2.30 is very bad (I was cautious, and used speedbrakes), let's see someone doing it under 2 minutes

The death star trench is boring, we need to add some obstacles (too bad we can't add bridges) like tv towers to make it more challanging.

And why won't you try my su25 race mission? it's not as hard to fly as the su25t, yet challanging and unpredictable.

Gustav & FF... 1:37/6, great times! I doubt 1:30 is possible FF, but I've done enough sim racing (cars) to know that if I can do a 1:43, someone can do a 1:33. Only time will tell.

And Greg & Quirk, keep going... you'll get there eventually :-)

Perhaps I should have made the first course a little simpler. That final tower makes landing a little tricky. However anything that encourages people to practise difficult landings must be a good thing. I rarely get to land in combat missions. Usually the AI arranges for me to land in several fields ;-)

Andrew McP

PS Later: Ok, managed to get a 1:36 at last. I think the biggest contribution to saving time is how much speed you can bleed off in the air before landing. The better you are are bleeding off speed (without crashing!) the faster you can go right up to the final tower. So perhaps I created a braking competition, not a racing competition. Maybe we should try a few more laps before landing, then we'd see bigger variations in time... and more angry shouting as we crash after several laps instead of just the one :-)

PPS FF That 25 track's hard work! It's like driving a Mini after driving a Ferrari for a while (not that I'd know :-). And getting that beast to slow down in a hurry without crashing is a pig, especially when you're used to having those massive 27 engines to power out of any slight problems you cause yourself. Interesting challenge though.

Maybe you should look at my su-25 course, and see if you can improve it, because now my average speed is like 600 kph (way too high for a su25). If you shrink the course, maybe it will be enough to make it both fast and hard to fly.

I still think we need some bridges (maybe using the two bridges at Sevostopol in a course) too bad we can't fly between the 4 chimneys now :(, but that's realism, if you do that in real world, don't expect to be having any tailfins left.

We need a new challange!

Just waiting for a spare couple of minutes to give it a go.

Ya, that's very fun...I think this shows me as a 1:34 if it starts at 12:00...I can live with that time. :D

"Land" time is wheels stopped, not just wheels touched down?

Hmm, can't find where to attach my uploaded pic to this message, so I'll just hang it out there.

...and like someone else said, it is kinda addicting...

Wingmen should pretty much stick to two radio transmissions, "Two." or "Sir, you're on fire."

I think that would be the most accurate way of judging times, just reading the debriefing.
