Arrowhead Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I got a new ATI 5770 1GB recently going from a 9600gt 512. Performance has been improved quite a bit, but I seem to be struggling with a fair amount of shimmering on the terrain. I remember with nVidia I used nHancer to set the AA level to something that removed the shimmering without killing performance. Now with ATI, I have ATI Tray Tools, but the only way to remove the shimmering is to engage full supersampling which really hurts performance even on this card. Am I missing something? What settings do you guys with similiar cards use? Should I just put up with the shimmering or what? Nate--IRL-- Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Edit:- Apologies I will read the first post fully before answering in future. Ignore below. The shimmering is most likely caused by the shadows cast by the clouds, this is an old graphics engine bug and the only workaround is to remove those shadows. http://www.lockonfiles.com/modules/Downloads/fileuploads/NoCloudShadows.zip Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
Arrowhead Posted July 30, 2010 Author Posted July 30, 2010 No, it's actually texture aliasing that I'm talking about. Super sampling clears it, but kills performance. Raising the LOD Adjustment to 1 in ATI Tray Tools does seem to help a bit (any higher, and the texture quality becomes awful.) nVidia has a negative lod clamp option in its drivers and an AA option that is better than multisampling but not as taxing as supersampling which made texture aliasing non-existant on my old 9600gt. You can see the aliasing most at low and medium altitudes. City textures appear to "shimmer". miguelaco Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Sorry for bumping this thread, but I'm fighting hard to get rid of city shimmering on my ATI card (5770). I'm still struggling with this, searching the forum for all the reports about this issue and I have not figured out a solution yet. This graphical glitch is important and breaks immersion for me. Have you found a solution? I've read reports of some success using Catalyst 10.5, but not tried it yet. I'm going to try this out and post the results.
Nate--IRL-- Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Try messing with the Mipmap setting (put it to best quality) in the catalyst control panel first, then try it in conjunction with increasing levels of AF. miguelaco Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I've tried mipmap settings as well as different levels of AF but notice no difference. So far, the setting that somewhat works for me is 8xAA with Supersampling, as Arrowhead pointed. However, this has a great impact on performance. Adaptive Antialiasing is a no go, as it renders same cockpit textures transparent. I tried also installing ATT and fiddling with lod bias options, forcing vsync and again this yield no results. Options are running out and Catalyst 10.5 is the only thing that's worth a try at the moment. Thanks for the response anyway
Lixma 06 Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I go with 4xAA in Super-Sampling mode. It just about kills the shimmers. Certainly enough to ignore them. As mentioned 8xAA starts chewing the FPS up.
miguelaco Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Sure, 4xAA Supersampling is the best compromise. Better than Multisampling as this unleashes the ant attack :-)
slamraamproductions Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Two weeks ago I bought a HD5770 and I got that city shimmering problem too:cry: No luck with the different mipmap settings. ( this city shimmering is comparable with that of fs2004, in fs2004 it is resolved by choosing a lower level of mipmap quality in the in game settings, but in Lock On it wont help ) <==DCS Flaming Cliffs 3: Operation Grand Slam <==Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2 Tribute
combatace Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 (edited) Week ago I bought 5750 after my 4670 died and what I found is I have very bad performance of 5750 over 4670. I got 45 fps at 3000mtrs and now I barely get 18-35. The most astonishing part is 10000mtrs I get 50 fps but plunges down to 8-9 intermittently this even happens at low altitudes too where it dips to 5-6fps. miguelaco Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 Well at least I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm getting mad with it, since the only games I play on PC are FC2, DCS:BS and DCS:A10C and all of them are getting that shimmering effect that ruins immersion. I'll keep on trying but the lack of results is leading me to consider a gtx460 or gtx470 when A10C becomes gold.
slamraamproductions Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I installed CCC 10.5 as suggested in some other post. With AA mode on Super Sample, the city shimmering is almost gone:) <==DCS Flaming Cliffs 3: Operation Grand Slam <==Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2 Tribute
combatace Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I moved back from 10.10 to 10.9 and I feel a bit more comfortable now. To support my models please donate to paypal ID: hp.2084@gmail.com https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/hero2084?referral=hero2084
miguelaco Posted October 28, 2010 Posted October 28, 2010 I installed CCC 10.5 as suggested in some other post. With AA mode on Super Sample, the city shimmering is almost gone:) Good to know! I also installed 10.5 but no difference with 10.10. By the way, how many FPS did you get with supersampling enabled on your 5770? I found that is bearable as long as there's not too much action on screen. Also, lowering some graphic options in game could compensate supersampling.
Wolf Rider Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 similar happens with nVidia GTX460 and the latest driver. Mustang Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 I've recently aquired a HD5770, and can also confirm that there is terrible shimmering from various textures, i have to say i never had this issue with my HD3850 :(
combatace Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Move to the latest drivers 10.10c that will fix it. To support my models please donate to paypal ID: hp.2084@gmail.com https://www.turbosquid.com/Search/Artists/hero2084?referral=hero2084
Mustang Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I've been on 10.10c that also had the shimmering, now on 10.10d and that has it also. Only Super-Sampling fixes it for now.

ziozeus Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I'm about to buy a radeon or nvidia... Do you guys still have this problems? (low fps and shimmering?) Any help from ati? Is it true that also nvidia has problems with latest drivers?
miguelaco Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I'm about to buy a radeon or nvidia... Do you guys still have this problems? (low fps and shimmering?) Any help from ati? Is it true that also nvidia has problems with latest drivers? I've got one HD6950 modded to HD6970 :smilewink: and frames are good. Not as good as expected, but hope it'll improve with the next catalyst version. In DCS BS shimmering is bad, but DCS A-10C hasn't any problem with it. Maybe future compatibility patch for BS will resolve this forever and ever. Anyway, I'm very satisfied with my new card. Highly recommended, specially now that mod to 6970 is still possible.
ziozeus Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Did someone try this and had performance and shimmering resolved? I'm about to choose between ati and nvidia also... :) http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/AMDCatalyst111aHotfix.aspx
