Vekkinho Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Two Croatian MiG-21bis jets collided in mid air during this morning training, one of the pilots managed to eject but the faith of the other fella is yet unknown. Steel Jaw Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Unfortunate. However, on a sidenote, what "training" would a '21 need to be a target drone? 1 "You see, IronHand is my thing" My specs: W10 Pro, I5/11600K o/c to 4800 @1.32v, 64 GB 3200 XML RAM, Red Dragon 7800XT/16GB, monitor: GIGABYTE M32QC 32" (31.5" Viewable) QHD 2560 x 1440 (2K) 165Hz.

Vekkinho Posted September 23, 2010 Author Posted September 23, 2010 Well, if there was anything in Croatian inventory to shoot it off the sky it could probably serve a drone purpose. There's not so it's Croatian only jet fighter, there's 12 of them in total of which 4 to 6 are airworthy. With a crash of these two this number is reduced to 2. Future plans based on equipping the fighter fleet with JAS-39C or F-16C have been postponed although I comprehend it as cancelled due to state's economy and lack of interest in aviation by Croatian Ministry of Defense! When we were together, we had among the most modern air force in the world. Pilots flew dozens if not hundreds of hours ... Now, in our Micro-countries, our pilots fly dozen or so hours a year. Slovenia does not even patrol its own country sky! Neither, Montenegro, FMRY and I don't think BiH does it either. Sovereignty, what was that? Fairy tale? Yes former Yu Army had a very powerful punch and the only way to defeat it was to force it on cutting it's own limbs off... Now apparently there were few explosions to be heard, ear witnesses say three in total, however one of these could be a M1.0 caused by an aircraft plummeting earthbound with throttle not backed up... Other's say that a piece of debris that might have fell off the aircraft could cause all the trouble, some even say it was a canopy that fell off and hit the other plane... I remember a August 5th, 2009 celebration over City of Karlovac when pieces of vertical stab leading edge fell on the spectators area during Fishbed air demo... No need for live ammo!!! mikoyan Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 Pieces faling off airplanes can happen everywhere too. Good to know that both pilots are ok.
Vekkinho Posted September 24, 2010 Author Posted September 24, 2010 I guess this had to happen, after years of low funding Croatian MiG fleet began desintegrating literally, thankfully without any casualties. Within next few months Croatian MOD should reach a decision on modernizing the fleet, too bad this had to happen. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Kenan Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 Buy a brand new car, don't take care of it, it will start breaking up in a year or two. Have a 30+ years old jet, don't maintain it properly and regularily..well, you get the picture. Vekkinho Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 It's not like these weren't maintained properly and thoroughly, it's just that there's so few of them in fleet today that each and every counts as many... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Vekkinho Posted September 27, 2010 Author Posted September 27, 2010 ...mishaps like this happen a lot even in some more modern airforces, each operational Croatian Fishbed does 20+ hours a month and that's big considering the funding problems. Just for comparison, this is the first mishap and write-off occurance that happened during peace time training flight. And the fact that both pilots survived ejection and got away with few scrathes caused by bushes they fell into say that birds are 100% reliable and safe. Most of the pilots who ejected never return to duty, these guys are already there. Croatia had something like 24 MiG-21bis when there was a need of having them all flyable ('94-'95). Today there's 4 birds in a 60 minute 24/7 standby (ready to scramble within 60 minutes) and that's big too considering the size and population of Croatia (4,5 mil citizens). Other 20 airframes serve as grounded 4 good trainers or are being canibalized for spares. Croatian MiGs were overhauled in Romania 6 years ago (repainted, engine overhaul and some minor electronic mods). But it's not the LanceR standard with full NATO compatibility and that's why it all sounds a bit weird to me...There's a huge SAAB comercial in latest Aero Svijet magazine issue. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
