I just spent some time flying online with a squadmate and was using EOS to find my vector to his wing. Both in su33.

He was getting a lock tone and RWR warning when i would lock in EOS.... i thought EOS was stealth? What am i missing?

Also - I was told that engaging EOS outside of 25km of bandit will give off a warning signal to your prey - is this true?

Any clarification welcome.

This is good question and this bug is new FC2 feature...Problem is maybe related to EOS scan zone limits or missile selection but i'm not sure.Or maybe is just another realistic downgrade of russian birds in lomac world?! Waithing for official answer...

yes this is a bug we discovered in the 51st trainings as well, on the same day FC2 came out!

But it seems like its not consistent, sometimes it works sometimes doesnt... but usually its working ok...

If you reload again it should be fixed...

I've never seen that issue yet. Weird... anyway better wait for DCS: Fighter :P - it is solid product.

It mostly happens when you lock a target with radar guided missile like R-27R/ER selected, if you have IR missile selected it won't happen. And for beyond 25Km someone here from ED tesers told me that beyond 8km RADAR does ranging, altitude and speed measurement for EOS but in short pulses so it remains stealth.

Well but even I have a question, why does I hear a lock tone when my wingman is behind me and locked a target in front of me?

Maybe you are between his radar and enemy :D

Is it even possible in real life ?

Yes I'm in between his radar and enemy but he has locked other plane and his signals are pinned on one target so I guess I should not get that lock warning. Because if so I should get a lock warning when my wingman is locked be enemy if I'm in between but even at that time too I don't get that warning. Its a bug I guess.

I have done some recent testing with a guy online. I had EOS lock on him until 35km with no warning for him. He went to mil power and then when he turned a few degrees.. maybe 20-30 degrees off aspect he got a warning for a second I think before EOS lost lock. (radar tried to compensate).

@Bob.. your signature gives me brain cancer.

How would your RWR know whom the radar is 'pinned to' if its receving an STT-like signal?

This happens when you lose EOS lock, eg. pass beyond gimbals etc., your radar takes over and gives a lock tone to the target.

The situation talked about by the OP is against a solid EOS contact which the individual tester locks and unlocks the contact at will. Seems to be a bug due to its inconsistency. Once the same mission is reloaded with exactly the same parameters the lock does not repeat.

I'll be more specific. He was maybe 1000 metres above me and I purposefully stayed below him to rule that out, at an average altitude of 12,000 metres. Indeed the testing happened because we both had a debate on TS about it before. I had proposed that he would get a tone immediately after 25km range. He didn't, which I was surprised about. He stayed perfectly rear aspect and pulled away full AB. Pulled away to 35k. Then went to Mil power. Then he turned slowly left (maintaining altitude) and at about 20-30% off aspect in Mil Power I lost EOS lock... but he got a quick spike of warning (35km in ILV mode lookup is a bit far for a solid radar lock). My HUD returned to BVR EOS mode.. the mode I originally invoked for the test.

But i take your point about the restart mission. It was something I had seen one of you guys mention in the bug thread before. :)

But if you guys would also consider aspect angle? Is there a relationship that as range increases the aspect gate for a good EOS lock falls in proportion?

Anyway if I get irritated (read: motivated) I might make a TACVIEW.

This raises a related point. In EOS BVR mode (Not CAC EOS) you can select ER's and ET/73's. When the EOS lock is outside the parameters for a good radar lock to fire ER's you can only IFF the contact by choosing ET's/73's. If you select ER's in this mode and hit the radar key you can't get IFF until you close range for a good rear aspect R lock. That to me seems retarded.

Yes. This is something I noticed only in SP campaign. I told the idiot AI wingman to "attack my target" and he agrees and I get a lock tone LOL. He does indeed engage and everything is normal. Just seems retarded also. :)
