Pilotasso Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I had a problem which looked like my GFX was overheating. Upon some research I found I was not the only one: yyVMvEY9bvs Apears to be a driver to kernel problem. Scary stuff, anyone ever had this? .
topdog Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Been running those drivers 24x7 for 2 months on a 3 yr old 8800 GTX without issue; but this card wasn't infamous for it's heat/noise like some others so maybe that would influence whether the card might be tipped over the edge or not. I don't use any tweak tools to OC the card either (though, if I vaguely recall, mine's an 'out of the box OC model' from the vendor). Vista 32-bit here though, so perhaps not identical software code either, even if the version numbers are the same. Boulund Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 Yep I had it a couple of weeks ago but didn't matter which drivers I used, turned out it was actually a cooling fin that had gotten loose on one of the memory units and it had thus overheated badly and gotten damaged. Rodney Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I have had other issues with those drivers and not overheating. I like two driver releases that have given me good results. 191.07 and 197.45* best results of the bunch.
71st_Mastiff Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 all the NVIDIA cards with the whql'ed 258.96 drivers and up are going to have fan issues. you will more than likely be better off using a 3rd party fan control like evga's precision tool controller. set the tool fan part to manual and 100% your card will run much cooler. http://www.evga.com/precision/ "any failure you meet, is never a defeat; merely a set up for a greater come back", W Forbes. bumfire Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I remember something similar from a few years ago, a new nvidia driver once installed would increase your gpu at idle by 10-15 oC and in some cases the gpu would cut out during gaming due to the heat. I remember it happening to me, as soon as the driver was installed, instead of having an idle of 50 something, I was now up in the high 60's Cheers for warning us about this prob Pilotasso
topdog Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 The worst issue was at the start of this year (around Dec-Feb) and an Nvidia driver release was somehow inverting the fan and as the card got hotter, the fan would cease. First noted by Starcraft 2 beta testers who were blaming Blizzard for toasting their graphics cards (the cards became unusably damaged), but turned out to the be driver. Anyhow, you say here that "all the NVIDIA cards with the whql'ed 258.96 drivers and up are going to have fan issues." - do you have a reference for this? Slayer Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I lost an 8800 GTX to overheating from fan control issues. bumfire Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Yes on nvidias forum I'm on bb right now can't give you link but it is the dev forums. Well, I just had a look at my driver version, and guess what ? I have 258.96 and have had it for ages without ANY problem's using a 280gtx. So not all cards will be affected, as mine aint as its temp is 49oC at idle, with 1470rpm fan and 40% fan duty cycle, the fan duty cycle smoothly goes upto 100% when the temp's rise. So in conclusion, not all cards are affected with driver 258.96, or for the last few months my card would of been affected.
Napa Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 For those who experience problems with the current Nvidia drivers, download the beta 260.89 drivers from Guru3D. They work perfectly on mine even in beta stage. http://downloads.guru3d.com/Videocards---NVIDIA-ForceWare-Vista_c32.html Intel i7 12700k / Corsair H150i Elite Capellix / Asus TUF Z690 Wifi D4 / Corsair Dominator 32GB 3200Mhz / Corsair HW1000W / 1x Samsung SSD 970 Evo Plus 500Gb + 1 Corsair MP600 1TB / ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3080 OC V2 / Fractal Design Meshify 2 / HOTAS Warthog / TFRP Rudder / TrackIR 5 / Dell U2515h 25" Monitor 1440p
sweinhart3 Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Ive been running both 280gtx and 470gtx on the 258 drivers for the last 6 months with no problems. Intel i7 990X, 6GB DDR3, Nvidia GTX 470 x2 SLI, Win 7 x64 http://picasaweb.google.com/sweinhart
bumfire Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 I just rebuilt my pc today with new parts, I go to download new drivers from nskidia, and 258.96 are still up as the latest whql drivers. So I doubt they are that bad or nvidia would of pwnd them by now especially if they were causing major problems with every card.
diveplane Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 no problems here running these drivers, and if there was problems, am sure nvidia will address it asap. https://www.youtube.com/user/diveplane11 DCS Audio Modding.
Pilotasso Posted October 14, 2010 Author Posted October 14, 2010 (edited) Well, my system was never the same after installing these drivers to play DCS: A-10C Beta. Finaly my operating system gave the bytes to the creator. Explorer kept failing shortly after Starting up wich gave me no choice but to reformat. Instaled 197.45 and its all back to the good old times. Installing the SIM's tomorrow only though. Its was a long ride today setting my PC up over again. Edited October 14, 2010 by Pilotasso .

So I doubt they are that bad or nvidia would of pwnd them by now especially if they were causing major problems with every card. There was a version up there at the beginning of summer and they pulled it right away and fixed it. There was a big warning on their driver download section for a while also. I've had the fan issue on various Nvidia hardware and driver combinations in several completely different computer builds since the release of the 8800's. It all seems to boil down to if the card manufacturer used the same fan control chip and stuck with the refrence Nvidia BIOS for the card. My original 8800 GTX's made by ASUS had a different fan chip than the stock refrence card and it took over a years worth of driver releases before the issue was finally corrected. I always make sure that the fans work properly after every driver upgrade now. Arclight Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Fan on my Gigabyte 8800GTS 512 failed to auto-control on any driver. Been using Rivatuner for it, never had any issues with botched drivers thanks to that. Now on GTX460, not much choice but to get latest drivers. They work absolutely fine though. The 260.xx beta on the other hand causes all kinds of issues, ditched those after 5 mins. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] DCS A-10C: putting the 'art' into 'warthog'. (yes, corny. Sorry.)
