Paramount Pictures is feeling the need for speed again.

According to Vulture, the studio has officially has made offers to producer Jerry Bruckheimer ("Pirates of the Caribbean") and director Tony Scott ("The Taking of Pelham 123") to develop a sequel to 1986's "Top Gun."

Christopher McQuarrie will pen the script and Tom Cruise is slated to return, albeit in limited capacity, as Maverick.

McQuarrie's rep confirmed to EW.com Thursday that the screenwriter had, in fact, been approached to write the film.

"Top Gun 2" has been one of the classic long-rumored sequels, but Bruckheimer only told MTV this past July that talks for the film were beginning to get serious. The problem would be setting the story in an atmosphere that focuses less and less on the dogfights that defined the original film, also directed by Scott.

"The aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago," Bruckheimer told MTV. "So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."

According to Vulture, McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects," the upcoming "The Tourist") has figured out a way to do just that. Cruise has reportedly agreed to take a smaller role in the sequel on the condition that it's not an "obvious" one, i.e. a flight instructor for the new class of pilots.

Might we suggest a guest ref for the volleyball match?

problem may be the choice of the plane . replacing the F-14 won't be easier . F-15 in A-stan could lead to some nice stuff

I'd guess they'll stick with Navy, no? Betting S/Hornet or even the plain old Bug, depending on what they're aiming at...

F-18 is a great plane but isn't as mythical as the tomcat at least for now (IMHO) . Afghanistan could bring some kind of a dark side because of the reality of the context and that could definitly be a plus . and Afghanistan could bring lot of interestings idea why are troops there , what are they fighting at (and for) does the Bin laden endless escape affects troops moral , what would happen if occidental troops leave etc ... add a girl and a love story or even a female pilot you can see there are lot of opportunities . could be fun a love story between a F-15 female pilot and a hog rider and the guy gets captured then he's saved and they're happy when they see themselves again you know .. love sourire2.gif

IMHO the Tomcat was not such a great aircraft.

(1) It was designed as an interceptor for fleet defense and so was a very poor dog fighter, the Turkey;

(2) It suffered from engine compressor stalls for most its career until the Deltas IIRC.

But who cared about that? I don't think we can ever have a mythical figher again. Lot less is unknown than back in those days. And even when some details are, people will think and claim that they know them. The mistery is gone.

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

When I was a kid Topgun was a great movie. Now that I'm not so much of a kid anymore (many will dispute this, but I digress) and it was on TV a while back, I nearly puked looking at it. My GF's likes it though... for some strange reason. Obviously I haven't beat her enough.

Not such a great aircraft? I could rant about how you are an idiot and that I will curse you by infesting your armpits with 100,000,000 camel flies but I'll save that for later. The only problem is that Post-Top Gun Insane Tom Cruise, who is straight, can't replicate the previous Pre-Top Gun Sane Tom Cruise that was obviously gay. We need a A-10 movie...Dirty Flying: Iraq.

It's like dirty dancing with the A-10. Which if an A-10 were to dance it would be very ugly considering the only dance it knows is the dance of pure, raw and epic destruction. Except it's basically Sean Connery, an ancient Northern European (He has the blood of all the Welsh, Irish, Scottish and English in him minus Titus Bramble.) pilot, somehow finds his way to the USAF and flies the beloved tusked destroyer. While going through the USAF Weapon School, etc etc. (Replace everything from the Top Gun film that has Navy stuff with Air Force stuff.) and finds himself in Saudi Arabia. Next thing you know he has to dogfight the entire Iraqi Air Force, who mostly fly with the skill of a retarded camel driver, and fight his way to Saddam's Pleasure Palace in Banghdad.

In true James Bond fashion he simultaneously pleases hundreds of non-Arabic po...Adult Entertainment Actors, while destroying the entire Iraqi arsenal using unlimited ammo. (Mind you this is while flying. BUT VRV OR WHATEVER YOUR NAME IS. HOW CAN MY MIND FATHOM THIS? Ten words. Space Elevator invented by the Japanese to combat Space Godzilla.) There is also one fundamental problem. The A-10 is a single seat aircraft while every Top Gun film ever created has to have at least two pilots in the same aircraft.

Midgets. His RIO / MIO is a midget that sits in this dome like thing in the center of the aircraft like R2D2. His radio malfunctions so he ends up sounding just like that adorable, godless, souless robot. But he dies because he gets struck by lightning. Thus Sean Connery, Maverick (His other callsign is AGM-65), becomes a raging alcoholic and fights Fat Val Kilmer resulting in being discharged by the USAF. But they need him when the Great Pornographer Kim-Hung Ill gets involved in the third film called Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, In North Korea.

And yes I was completely sober when I created that Illiad-esque epic of air combat.

Even though it was also full of clichés, I liked the french movie "Les Chevaliers du ciel" -> "Sky Fighters" a lot more than Top Gun, mainly due to their nice camera work (cameras were mounted on a Mirage).

Correct: the Turkey was a FLOP. Get over it. ;)

I think Mower is confusing the F-4 with the F-14 heh

For all the haters of Top Gun, at least it was better than that "documentary" Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag.

What was wrong with Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag?

Better than TG it was.

Now I *did* like American Fighter Pilot somewhat and the best so far has been JETSTREAM.

Now this would be then the upper nonsense, to call a F-4 Phantom as FLOP, but to call the F-14 as FLOP shows me, that some people have no idea what they are posting in here anyway.
