Namenlos Ein Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Russian transcript.
Mnemonic Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 (edited) Two "Americans", that came to Ahtubinskiy testing ground as trophies from Vietnam, received trials in the institute. One "American" is - A-37 attack aircraft. Other - F-5 fighter, with whom we experienced many issues at first. We managed to repair electrical schematics of the aircraft (without any documentation), that was damaged during transportation. Then, get used to maintain service of unusual (for us) airframe, engine, avionics and weapons. Next step was making a flights on trophy fighter by institute test-pilots: Alexander Bezhavec, Nicolai Stogov, Vladimir Kandaurov. But main goal of our military-scientific exploration of F-5, was making dogfights with MiG-21bis fighter. These two aircrafts were created in the end of 1950's, are very similar by characteristics, and had very similar weapons. They even receive modernization almost simultaneously. Both fighters were living in parallel worlds and never met each other in dogfights. Never... Before Achtubinsk in 1975. Our scientists were expected advantage of MiG-21, but "American" won all fights. Dogfight analysis allowed precise formulation of requirements on flight characteristics, avionics, and weapon systems for next generation of our (soviet) aircrafts. 159th_Viper Posted November 22, 2010 Posted November 22, 2010 Wait, those Americans defected? I've never heard of an account where a US pilot defected to Russia. 'Americans' is referring to the 2 planes, not the pilots. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Click me to commence your Journey of Pillage and Plunder!
