Hi All,

I bought the game a few days ago and am trying to get a mate to buy also so that we can hook up in multiplayer.

Launching the multiplayer online part of the game i can see that there are no serrvers, i found this strange as I would have thought that us beta players would have setup servers to play MP.

Does anyone know if the MP part of the game is functional and can be played?

Thanks Mithandra

Very few multiplayer servers. It appears that with the new multiplayer DRM (requiring your email address) you cannot run a multiplayer server on one computer and run a multiplayer client on the other. For example, if I start an A-10C multiplayer client and then start an A-10C multiplayer on my server machine (stallturn) I get booted out of the client (or booted out of the server if I started that first). Perhaps I missed some way around this and the DRM isn't really that bad (although it could just be 'wobbles' since it is the first Beta version it has been implemented - but does seem to be poorly thought out, and having to hand out your email address to play with no defined privacy policy is even more awful).

Worse, if ED goes out of business, needs cost cutting (eg. shuts down validation servers and maintenace personnel to save money), or gets bought by another company (with no interest in the product at some point in the future) then you won't be able to do multiplayer - since you are tied to validating to a server to play. There have been enough short-lived MMORPS on the Internet already to show this is a distinct possibility for customers who have paid for a game that they can be locked out in the future.

If you have to pay for two licences to run a A-10C server I can see the number of servers remaining very limited. I hope I am very wrong with this, otherwise it is epic ...

thanks for your comments Moa, Yes that would be a concern. When you log into MP you can create a server though, I am assuming you wait for people to join said server and then launch the game (as per many of MP games) There is nothing listed in the list for any servers which is what concerns me :)

Thanks Mithandra

To clarify, I meant that if you start a 'dedicated' server you get booted out if you then use the same key when joining as from a (different) client computer. This will limit the number of multiplayer servers out there.

People that 'self-host' (have multiplayer server and client on same machine) can get terrible lag spikes. This is to be expected at this stage of the Beta (not yet optimized) - but requiring an email address and locking servers is unexpected.

As HiJack said, you need to be running Beta3 and be logged in to (the new) ED Net to see other servers.

Both Mithandra and I created and joined each others servers but the sim crashes after a couple of minutes.

Mithandra also had connection problems where I could see him on the server as a spectator but he couldn't see the lobby or me.

He allowed the .exe through his firewall but I believe his fwall may still be not 'cleanly' connecting him.

He uses a router and has set the sim's mp port in his rules.

Any ideas?

If you can connect at anytime, then the problem is most likley not a firewall or router in any way. You are either blocked or not blocked for the most part.

Make sure you guys have both beta 3 installed. Note that MP is still a WIP. Try simple missions first with low object counts and no AI waypoints to remove that chance of bugs brining the mission down.

It is the publically stated policy (and has been for a long time) that if ED were to go out of business they would "patch out" the DRM. Compare to what The Software Refinery did for their game HardWar when they went bust. (If memory serves the policy was stated regarding DCS:BS and I believe it would still apply since I've not heard anything else.) The people at ED and TFC love their products and like any artists wants the world to see and enjoy them, even if there were to be such a sad development as no longer being able to continue development.

The reason why this might not be plastered all over the place is that then everyone on the forum would be all "oh **** they're about to go bankrupt!" The Internets have this habit of making a mountain out of a molehill. :P

EDIT

Found the quote, and it was for FC2, not DCS:BS, but I see no reason to believe this would be applied to only one product:

If in the unfortunate circumstance Eagle Dynamics were to go out of business, our intent would be to release a final patch to remove copy protection.

How's the MP working now?

So, Mower the 1st is starting an A10 squadron? I'm interested but will not be back home until the 30th December.
