Midwestboi Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 (edited) Thanks for the info... gives me a lot to think about. I do like having the versatility of the laptop- should I ever NEED it for mobile use- I have it. It has worked well as a desktop replacement- just not as much fun without a normal keyboard. Considering there are very few applications that take advantage of quad-cores, I was thinking that my dual-core OC'd to 3.3Ghz was pretty fast. It only has 2MB L2 cache- which some have said is the problem. But I have no problems running racing sims and Wings of Prey at max res with the HD 3850- although I'm not sure what my fps is, but I don't have any issues with it. Someone advised that upgrading to Win7 would be the biggest improvement I could make- and would be able to make use of 4G ram (or 6G if I went with the 4G upgrade for $85). Thankfully Gigabyte has 64-bit drivers available for my motherboard. I don't plan to run more than two monitors on the sim- I just don't have the space. As it is now, my bedroom is almost full thanks to the PVC cockpit I built. :pilotfly: So if I go with your suggestion power5, then I would just keep my laptop and would only need to run the two monitors off the 5870. I know a lot of people have said on here that the A-10C is more 'CPU' intensive- but I can't imagine the final 'optimized' release will require more than 3.3Ghz- especially with a monster graphics card with 1G DDR5 onboard. EDIT: I forgot to mention- I had considered selling the Cougar MFD's when they arrive, but after reading more about them, I think they can be very useful with other sims and games- since they are programmable (via Xpadder). Plus, what is nice is I can swap out the backgrounds for whatever sim or game I'm using. I won't mount them on the monitor as I had originally expected tho- since I plan to get the touchscreen and export the MFD's via HELIOS instead of through DCS using the Cougars. I also found this handy online background creator for the Cougars- letting you upload your own backgrounds and add button text. http://cougarmfd.thrustmaster.com/ Edited January 3, 2011 by Midwestboi SYSTEM: ASUS P8Z77-V // Intel i5-3570k Ivy Bridge 3.4Ghz o.c. 4.4Ghz // 8GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3 PC2133 9-11-10-28 // MSI 570GTX Twin Frozr 1.25GB PCI-E 2.0 x16 // Win7 64-bit Home Premium ~~ DISPLAY: Sanyo 42" HDTV@1900x1080 ~~ DRIVES: Intel 330 series 60G Maple Crest SSD SATA III // WD 4000AAKS 400GB SATA II // WD Scorpio (laptop drive) 320GB SATA II ~~ CASE: AZZA Hurrican 2000 Full Tower // Cooler Master 750W P.S.
Midwestboi Posted January 4, 2011 Posted January 4, 2011 I ended up ordering the Radeon HD 5870 today... I couldn't pass up the deal. After the discounts and rebate, it'll only end up costing $199- which is cheaper than the 5850's are selling for. Next week I plan to order the extra RAM and Win7 Home Upgrade, so hopefully all of this will give me excellent fps with the A-10 sim. SYSTEM: ASUS P8Z77-V // Intel i5-3570k Ivy Bridge 3.4Ghz o.c. 4.4Ghz // 8GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3 PC2133 9-11-10-28 // MSI 570GTX Twin Frozr 1.25GB PCI-E 2.0 x16 // Win7 64-bit Home Premium ~~ DISPLAY: Sanyo 42" HDTV@1900x1080 ~~ DRIVES: Intel 330 series 60G Maple Crest SSD SATA III // WD 4000AAKS 400GB SATA II // WD Scorpio (laptop drive) 320GB SATA II ~~ CASE: AZZA Hurrican 2000 Full Tower // Cooler Master 750W P.S.

power5 Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Midwest: MFDs will still need to be exported via lua scripting in DCS. Helios is displayed over top of anything you want. Its the top top layer of windows basically. You can over lay it on top of your main cockpit view if you wanted. At least that is how I understood it. I have not tried that of course. Its the top top layer of windows basically. You can over lay it on top of your main cockpit view if you wanted. At least that is how I understood it. I have not tried that of course. I'm confused now. How do you make the MFD's usable with a touchscreen through DCS export? I thought that is what Helios did- displays various panels for the purpose of touch activation- so what am I missing?? If Helios is the top layer- why would you still need DCS exporting anything? I thought Helios interacts with DCS- but doesn't require DCS to 'export' independently of Helios. If Helios can replicate gauges and everything- then doesn't it do the same with the MFD's?? airdog Posted January 7, 2011 Author Posted January 7, 2011 Helios has the mfd bezels with the osb buttons and rockers. DCS only exports the mfd display not the osb buttons. So.....you export the mfd displays as laid out in numerous other threads then in helios you set your mfd bezels to go around your exported mfd's and poof you have touch buttons around your MFD's. Why does helios not do this.....I think the question really should be...Why SHOULD helios export the mfd's if ED is already doing it for us? The other real issue is that helios is extracting data...the mfd's are a video feed and a different monster I assume. Helios programming is also a 1 man show...gotta use your resources wisely. Gadroc Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 The honest answer is we can't extract the video feeds. DCS would have to supply us a way to that read the video data and currently it doesn't.
Midwestboi Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 Thanks for the info, it makes sense now. ;-) I was confusing the MFD 'display' with the entire screen/bezel. stelios2000 Posted April 10, 2011 Posted April 10, 2011 (edited) This is really an incredible piece of software even in it's beta form. I made all the panels in the Helios software with very little instruction. It will be so worth the money when it is released. Dear airdog, Can you please tell me what size of monitor have you used here with the TM MFDs???? Also can you please tell me something about helios software?I have made a profile run it and then run the A-10C. But nothing happens....Do i have to change something at the option menu( monitor setup and resolution )????? I want to represent the same for my cockpit (the front only..I will not get a touch screen though) and i will make with real switches the left and right panels. thank you stelios Edited April 10, 2011 by stelios2000
airdog Posted April 10, 2011 Author Posted April 10, 2011 That monitor is a 18.5 inch 1366x768 monitor...non touch. Please take a look at the FAQ on SCSimulations site for a quick down and dirty on how to get your panel running correctly. It will be much quicker than me trying to explain it here. Couple of question though....what is your setup configuration? Have you got the A10 MFD's exported to your second monitor yet? The MFD's need to be exported thru A10 the Helios is an overlay with exported switches and gauges. There is also the ability to export RWR digital clock and UHF repeater but is all done thru A10 then you build your panel around the exports. Its all on the SCS site. IF you ask your questions there the local geniuses will be quick to help out at all houirs of the day and night. You can do the same with Helios... just have to stick to Keyboard actions instead of the built in FC2/DCS integration. You can't use gauges though.
