Holding off buying until full release: ok?

Hi. I have been following this simulation with great interest. At this stage, I have been holding off buying, as they are releasing beta versions. I want to wait until a full release is offered. BUT...I have a suspicion this strategy, normally a good one, may not be applicable here. I'm after a steer here: is the beta to all intent and purposes, a full, largely bug free simulation? Am I right to wait for the full release? What do you think? Grateful views.

Beta 4 is very good in my opinion and is worth the purchase. By the time you get up to speed on learning the basics of the operation and ready to dive into the campaigns or full missions the game will probably be a release candidate.

Bear in mind you are pre-purching the ga.....sim. The beta is only a bonus.

There are enough bugs to be frustrating if you intend to try to play it as a retail/fully functional game. But if your happy just learning and putting up with crashes to desktop and possible errors introduced by newer beta versions, I advise to hold off.

 

However, learning this Sim takes along time so it may be worth getting it just for that. As long as you can be patient and able to live with unexpected bugs, go for it.

 

The ultimate question is , If a bug crept into the Betas that meant you couldn't play it for a month would that annoy you? For me I could live with it, so I jumped in.

Beta 4 (and a graphics drivers update) fixed almost all of the CTDs I was getting. The game is stable and a ton of fun to play, especially now that I can reliably run combat missions without crashing.

 

There are still a few rough edges (ATC and radio comm is still a work in progress, for one) but it's close enough to "finished" that I wouldn't have any qualms about buying.

You can use pretty much any joystick - obviously there are really nice ones out like the TM Warthog and the X-52/X-65/G940, but a $10 Saitek will work perfectly as long as you don't mind using the keyboard for most of the HOTAS functions.

Be warned! This sim is the road to ruin. Look at all of the accessories in my sig; except for the TrackIR, I've bought everything in the last few months especially for A-10C. It's a time sink, too. I don't fly anything else now (except for an occasional hop in IL-2) and I couldn't care less. The training missions are a blast, landings feel like a real achievement, and the THUNK THUNK of AAA hitting the a/c makes you jump out of your seat.

 

Yes, there are holes right now but I can see past them (I'm the patient type). If you're the same way, get the the beta. If you need a finished project to stay sane, wait a little while. Remember: save some money so you can kit this puppy out!

I'd wait if I were you until a good beta or reasonable stable comes along. Right now I can't even play A-10C in MP with my friends because they followed a different patch path than I did even though we all have beta 4; so who knows what will happen in the next beta you know...

 

But if you're gonna do only SP then go ahead, but only if you don't mind running into shitty bugs or missing featuers you would've expected to be done in alpha stage already.

If you plan on buying this then it would be in your best interest that you pre-purchase, download the beta and get started familiarizing yourself with the sim. There is an extremely steep learning curve and by the time the release candidate is released you can jump right into it.

It is not that buying DCS A-10 as a impulse buy, it's just that i went through the 10 times safelock part really fast, than later again with the X65F, then a Wii remote to use for freetrack... and now i'm already looking to get some pedals... maybe another monitor will be nice too... these MFD things look nice too... damn

LOL. that's the problem with being a PC simmer. There is always something we need/want next.

I had no quarrels about buying DCS: Warthog though, and I still think that it was well worth the money, in fact its worth a lot more than the asking price. Im still on the fence about the TM Warthog though :P

 

If you can live with the fact that there are still a few bugs, and that things are still a work in progress then Id say go for it! Its an incredible sim even at its current state. And Beta 4 is fairly stable, I havent had a CTD yet, and if that's not enough, the optimization that has gone into Beta 4 means that FPS is a lot higher than it was in the previous Betas :)

The way I see it is I'm going to buy and fly it anyway. May as well get it asap so I can enjoy it rather than not have it at all.

It's like an appetizer - you're just waiting for the main meal. But that's me. Some would prefer not to spoil their dinner and wait to fully appreciate their steak.

its a big learning curve, so i suggest purchasing it and start learning the systems.

You buy the full game before it is released, that's called a pre-purchase. The Beta is a bonus you get for buying the full game before it is released. You don't buy the beta and hae to pay for the full game again...

I did the pre-purchase when it was first offered just so I could see the kind of quality A-10C will have on release. Since then I've decided I won't fly any more of the beta releases - I can't be bothered with bugs. My curiosity is satisfied so I'm happy to wait (however long) for the gold release, at which point l'll probably end up sinking all my time into it.:)

Ok. Thanks everyone who replied. Hmmmmm. I am going to get this sim so I might as well do as people suggest and pre-purchase and get access to the beta. Start learning.

I see no reason why you shouldn't pre-purchase and fly the beta now if you intend on getting the full game when it comes out. I had a bad experience with a pre-purchased beta for an A320 sim which I won't name so I was initially hesitant but the mostly postive feedback on this forum convinced me to take the plunge and I've no regrets whatsoever.

 

As others have mentioned there are some bugs which needs to be resolved but there's enough in the beta to keep you occupied for a couple of months while learning the systems etc.

 

I'm so impressed with it at the moment I'm thinking of getting a Warthog HOTAS and a pair of cougar MFD's to complete the picture :)

I'm waiting for the boxed version and it looks as though a 2010 release isn't going to happen :(

 

Im not too fussed though, I'd rather the final release be done right than done quick, good choice ED!
