why I need study English ,what a f**k!

Well althought english have many similarities you don t have the exact same pronouciation meaning 5 diferent things just by inflection, which is scary to me, and most have kind of fun relation (like mother and cow)as it has been said.

Also any kind of scripting in represenation, like Japonese, Chinese and so many others asiatic languages is only subjective after some point. Thats why nobody know all Chinese Character and if any know all japonese characters.

The latin alfabet (and some others) try to avoid this rationalizing the scripting to a combination of a few characters.(Which come to the extreme and funny German championship of the longest word)

Looking at those 2 aspects occidental is easyer than oriental, but oriental has a broader range of detailing even if a lot of the scripting fall in "obsolescence" due to no use.

There only one way to really learn any language: a passion linked to it.

If you don t connect something you really need /like to the language your trying to learn, you ll never pass good, if that much.

And there s worst... most languages requires diferent uses of the same muscles (which get used in our childhood to operate in usually one or 2 forms connected to language learning) thats why people from some languages are utterly challenged to correctly reproduce sounds and words from some foreign languages. which can lead to dramatic mistakes in languages leaded by inflection.

There also the mindset behind the language that affect much of the language structure, learning a gramatically foreign language is a good way to avoid alzheimer, but men, you gonna sufferrrrr.

Agreed. That stems from lazy pronunciation though.

They should be obviously different in sound, but ironically I would find it easier to describe the difference in what I'm saying better in terms of chinese tones or russian hard/soft signs. Heh. Trouble is when people try to speed up the comms, the differences disappear.

Some English accents or dialects drop the "t" at the end of a word. This can make "can" and "can't" sound the same. There are subtle pronunciation differences though. When a trailing "t" in "can't" is dropped, it is usually replaced with a glottal stop. Whereas the "n" sound in "can" is allowed to trail longer and is terminated by removing the tongue from the roof of the mouth, with "can't" it is stopped abruptly with the glottis.

EDIT: You can also distinguish the two sounds because an instance of "can" will end with the "n" sound blending into the next word ("can go" sounds like "cannngo"), whereas with "can't" there will be a very brief moment of silence between the two ("can't go" sounds like "can <tiny pause> go").

Yeah thats all good, but doesnt help one bit when many of us are saying can and cant flavoured with our own personal accent since we are from different non english native speaking countries, talking over a mike :D I guess one could try to adapt a british pronounciation of cant, and exaggerate, maybe that would work. Or start saying "can not".

Yeah, I think native speakers subconsciously figure it out by listening to the way speakers pronounce other words with "t"s in them, and then using that to determine whether or not "can't" will be pronounce "can't" or "can'<stop>".

I have a surefire way to quickly and easily learn multiple language at the same time. Live with native speakers before the age of ten (or even watch TV in the desired language at an early age).

I think the worst thing in English is the pronounciation. Languages like German and Finnish are much easier from that standpoint, as the letters themselves tell you how to pronounce something. Arguably "fish" could be spelled "ghoti". There's also the problem of the difference between UK and US English. I would write "colour" for example.

Posted

Can't expect the US to spell colour when they can't even spell all the individual ones correctly (gray / grey). :D

But I like the multiple meanings you can get from an English phrase.

How about this one - "fruit flies like a banana"

Did I mean "some insects such as fruit flies enjoy eating bananas".

Did I mean "banana shaped fruit flies".

Did I mean "all pieces of fruit will fly through the air with the aerodynamic qualities of bananas".

.............there your brain comes and you translates it into correct meaning depending of context :)

If you are scientist I think answer 3 will be correct, it'd be odd to talk about ex. flies and so on ^^...... context..... it is sometimes quite difficult but this is why we have brain :D
