You could use the HSI (search the manual, the one I have is out of date [page 111 for me])

or likewise use the heading tape located in your HUD

Look in your HSI. The bearing range given is not a bearing to the target -- that's what the coordinate and/or datalink is for -- it's a bearing range from which to make the attack, so if you are given "Bearing 90 to 180", for example, you would run in from the south-east.

This is my interpretation of how it works. I'd happily stand corrected if I'm mistaken.

The easiest thing to do is dial in the correct heading on the course knob on the HSI, It will help you line up in the correct direction. It helps with situational awareness if you're flying in low, changing directions frequently.

Thanks for that tip!

Just to be clear, if it's attack from bearing 90 to 180, would I fly in east of the area with 180 dialed in?

With 180 you would be coming in from the south. 90 would be east.

Here is another way to make sure you are approaching your target from the JTAC's requested bearing:

1.) Set your left MFCD to TAD.

2.) Set the TAD as SOI

3.) Hook the JTAC Datalinked Target (Red Triangle) and set it as SPI (Look for mini wedding cake)

4.) Next to OSB 18 on on the left MFCD is OWN HOOK. This means the bearing and distance data that is in the bottom right of the TAD is showing the bearing and range from you (OWN=Ownship) to the target we have hooked (HOOK). We want to switch that with a OSB 18 keypress to HOOK OWN which will then show the bearing and range from the HOOK to us (OWN).

Now with that set, you just look at the bearing/range data to ensure you are approaching the target from the requested bearing.

Hope this helps.

You can read more on this in the Flight Manual on page 303!

Hmmm. must test that, WarriorX thanks, you are allways so helpful :smilewink:

Edit : but how then if i don't use hookmethod, if i use your UTM coordinate Entry Tutorial method to locate targets, which method is better??

Switching the OWN/HOOK to HOOK/OWN really only helps you correctly comply with the JTAC's bearing request from the 9 Line, it has nothing to do with your choice of JTAC Datalink, or CDU UTM Coordinate Method, but to answer your question:

I find the JTAC Datalinked Target is always the preferred method for me, but if something goes wrong with your NET Settings, then you can use the UTM Coordinate Entry method as a backup.

I mean if Jtac says me attack targets from 180-200, then i fly between those bearings? put my HSI examble 190

No, just the opposite. JATAC is requesting you attack from 180-200, so your nominal attack heading would be 010.

Yeah thanks, i just firured it out, of course my heading is opposite heading where i'm coming from.

WarriorX hook own method i turn on the target when TAD bearings show me 180-200, did i figured it right?

Correct. With HOOK/OWN when it reads between 180-200 from the target to your plane, you then turn in on a heading of roughly 010 to begin your run.

Good job as usual Zenra for your helpful post! +1 (You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Zenra again)

Out of curiosity I must ask:

Is JTAC attack from Bearing message just randomly created message for player immersion (and can be ignored) or is it created depending on enemy units.

Also, does attacking from wrong bearing influence Jtac in saying abort?

A usefull tip to quickly calculate the reciprical of a bearing in to

"add 200 and subtract 20 from the bearing"

or

"add 20 and subtract 200 from the bearing"

whichever gives a value between 0 and 360.

Or you could just look at the HSI ;-)

Dude I never listen to what anybody tells me, basically because I have no idea what it means. I'm a noob, so I just shoot everything with mavericks regardless of what the JTAC tells me. I also ignore where he tells me to fly. Never had an abort yet ... just a good job

I want to say it is dependant on where the friendlies are. For example I fyou do a gun run from north to south and your JTAC is south you may hit the JTAC. So JTAC might give you a attack run east to west.

I nearly always got the abort message before I had this figured out. It does not like MP for the messages though
