dooom Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 got my new hotas set up tonight... i have a question about PAC GAU firing solutions - It seems that the GAU only fires in a short burst when diving on a tgt - even though I am holding the trigger in... any ideas why? if flying straight and level i can keep the GAU firing much longer... I dont understand why GAU does not continue to fire until i let go ot trigger. What am I not understanding about this? JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 What HOTAS do you use? Are you running a stick profile? Did you try to use keyboard command to fire gun for comparison? Same behaviour? Migo Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 It seems that the GAU only fires in a short burst when diving on a tgt - even though I am holding the trigger in... any ideas why?Do you use the HOTAS Warthog ? Mine got a trigger that I had to press very hard to constantly fire. If I just depressed the 2nd stage it it just fired for a second and stopped, I really had to push that thing hard and that was very annoying. Must be something about the contacts. Hoping my next HOTAS won't have that issue.
Eddie Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 I really had to push that thing hard and that was very annoying. Must be something about the contacts. Hoping my next HOTAS won't have that issue. It's designed that way on purpose, in order for all the switches to require pressure as close to the real thing as possible. You need to want to press pickle or fire the gun in a real aircraft, it's not like the horrible squidgy trigger on the saitek or logitech offerings.
Migo Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 But I didn't had to push down hard to shoot the gun. It was just that it stopped randomly and I had to push down harder.

Hoping my next HOTAS won't have that issue. You don't have to press it hard, you just need to press it deep enough. Resistance isn't big, however 2nd stage is very deep, and if you use middle part of finger to squeeze trigger, body of the stick might stop your finger from pressing trigger deep enough. Try using tip of the finger for pressing tip of the trigger - it will be very easy then. Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
Migo Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 (edited) Like I said, the one I had wasn't acting right, but I don't have it anymore, better focus on the 1st post. :) Edited July 21, 2011 by Migo
Frostiken Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Microswitch could be faulty... which sounds like Migo's problem. May have become unseated. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
sobek Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Well, i kinda have that too, the problem is that the switch does not automatically go to the conducting state just because you pushed through its detent. So while the trigger remains 'depressed' you can still go between on and off by variating the applied pressure, without so much as having to go out of the depressed state. All those cheapo switches used in periphery display this behaviour to some extent, it's perfectly normal, just push that sucker hard enough. ;) Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
dotChuckles Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 Dooom? Is it possible that you have a 2 stage trigger like the X52? And that the fire button is mapped to the first stage rather then the second? So as you squeeze the trigger the first stage triggers but then stops as you pull past it to the second stage. Make sense? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Hotas Cougar has 2 stage trigger too (guess the Hotas Warthog has it as well) On the cougar the first stage is still on when pressing the trigger to the second stage, so i guess that's not an option. EtherealN Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 (edited) Yes, they're acceptable stick, but they are positively flimsy compared to something "real" like the TM Warthog. And by "real" I mean in the sense of replicating the pressures required to operate the switches on the real thing. The Saiteks seem to go more on the same paradigm as my Razer gaming mouse - minimum pressure required to operate the buttons in order to ensure fastest possible response time. Problem with that idea in this kind of thing is that it also greatly increases the risks of accidental and/or premature discharge. In the case of the Weapon Release button specifically this can cause issues if you have, for example, a JDAM profile active. With the more solid (or whatever description is appropriate, not sure which word best describes it) triggers and switches on real planes and on the replicas you literally have to really "mean it" to start a release or fire sequence. They do however take some getting used to - when I switched from X52 to TM Warthog I would very often have the kind of squiggly bursts of GAU-8 fire that appear to be described in the OP - I just wasn't used to applying and maintaining the pressure required to keep firing the second stage. It's not really much of a worry once you are used to it, just different. Harzach Posted July 21, 2011 Posted July 21, 2011 +1 Took me a while to get used to the TMWH, but as someone mentioned, it helps to use your fingertip on the trigger rather than wrapping your whole finger around it. You can much better feel the subtle *click* of the second stage switch when you do.
dooom Posted July 21, 2011 Author Posted July 21, 2011 yup - i have the hotas warthog... just looked at replies today... will try a harder depress first to see if i can get a constant fire.
