Default payload in Georgian Hammer campaign

I find the missions in Campaign: Georgian Hammer very difficult to go get succes in, with the default payload.

I'm a newbie in the DCS A-10, and maybe I do something wrong.. But let me explain. Typical there are a lot of armoured vehicle, f.x. T-72's. You and your wingman have together 8 AGM-65 missiles, and then you have unguided bombs and your gun to the rest. The GBU-97, which is a cluster bomb, and it can't kill a T-72. The other unguided bomb is the MK-82 AIR. I find it nearly impossible to hit a T-72 with that kind of bomb. I think I do the right thing, then I send the MK-82 away, use the CCRP very precisely, but the bomb hit 50-100 meters away from the target.

Can some one please help me? Du I misunderstand the priority of the missions or....?

The 97's are "under construction" in this build. They won't have much effect on armor (for now).

Plinking tanks with MK 82s is not easy! I would set them up to be low drag, and use CCIP. I think you'll have better luck with that

Well I see. But it sounds like it's not only me having problems with the default payload in this campaign. Am I doing something wrong, or?

Another thing, how much are you using friendly? I mean "F10 OTHERS" Calling in SEAD, CAP and CAS.

Using Friendlies

On approach to your target, you will probably be lit up by enemy radar/ aircraft.

That is probably a good time to turn around, go back and orbit around a safe waypoint, call SEAD and CAP and wait until they've done their job.

With the radio switched to the correct frequency, 124.00mhz in most campaign missions, you will hear the OTHERS calling in attack runs and targets.

It's a good idea to keep a note of the OTHERS' callsigns, so you know who's attacking what.

This is where a Mission Data Card can come in handy.

Loadouts

I made a couple of custom loadouts for the campaigns because I wasn't having much joy with those provided. One for tanks and soft targets and one for tanks and buildings.

The files in the above link also include a weapons guide which can help you put together some loadouts that work well for you.

Use your gun only when you're sure you're not going to get your ass whipped by AAA units.

Best offense is a good defence.

PS

is best used from higher altitudes eg 8000ft +, CCIP is better suited for dive attacks, better from lower altitudes eg 10,000ft or less.

Sorry to resurrect this post, but I have some questions here...

I too find it very difficult to effectively fight with some of the default weapons. CBU-87's and MK-82AIR's seem to be pretty effective at putting holes in the ground all around the T-72's and BMP-2's.. However, if I load up 4*CBU-105's and 4*Mav's it's almost too easy...

I was under the assumption that the default loadout was chosen for a reason, but it seems like it might be somewhat arbitrary... Ok yes, you get GBU-10's for the mission with the bridge, but CBU-87's and MK-82AIR's for a tank column? I can either fly out of range and miss a ton of targets, or move mud and get holes punched in my plane from the machine guns.

I know we have these other more awesome weapons for a reason; to "Fly, fight, and win!" but is choosing the best weapons available the *realistic* choice?

I personally use 4x cbu 105 and 6x agm65d. When I know I have to destroy a bridge or building I add in a gbu38. There are all "smart" bombs and will fall where you want them too. I dont know if this is a realistic setup because it will probably cost a lot but at least you wont cause to much collateral damage.

Does anybody in here know what would really be used for this kind of missions?

These days for anti-armour you'd be looking at 2x AGM-65, and then either GBU-38, GBU-12, Mk-82 or a mix of 2 or all 3, maybe CBU-87 depending on the rules of engagement and the type of armour (CBU-87 is effective on all target below main battle tanks).

The A-10 has never used CBU-97 or 105 in combat in reality. In fact only a very small number have ever been dropped from any aircraft.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say the problem is not WHAT weapons you're using, but HOW you're using them. Combined with the fact that many (most) single player missions are not particularly realistic by their very nature.
