aces_full85 Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Hi guys, Does anyone know of an online resource to research the AAA and SAM systems that're featured in the simulator? It would be really nice to know the difference between an SA-8 and an SA-15. How does one know if the missiles are IR or radar guided? What about an estimated performance envelope? I've seen some people on here with a wealth of knowledge but just where did they learn it from? lol. I don't have the manual in front of me but I don't ever remember seeing information like that. Any help would be much appreciated!
Eddie Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Have you tried looking at the encyclopaedia in the sim?
kylania Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 This has some great information in it: http://files.lockon.ru/en/86362/ Here's a sample of it's RWR Threat guide: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Christmas Cheer - A Landing Practice Mission : Beta Paint Schemes : HOTAS Keyboard Map : Bingo Fuel - A DCS A-10C Movie
aces_full85 Posted September 13, 2011 Author Posted September 13, 2011 Thats a great link kylania, thank you. I briefly browsed through the DCS encylopedia but unfortunately I don't have a lot of extra time to research on my gaming computer. It would be awesome if I could export the data and print it out though, it seems like a long shot but does anyone have any idea if thats possible?
elchacal Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Excelent, thanks a lot for the info! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

All the DCS Encyclopedia stuff is included with the free iWarthog App for the iPhone/iPod/iPad, if you have access to one of those devices. The Encyclopedia is not quite as useful as the chart above because for example to look up the SA-8 you'd have to already know it's the "Osa 9A33 In" which is what it's listed as in the list. Snoopy Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Just an FYI....when I was putting the air defense guide together it wasn't easy getting range/altitude info for the various threats. What you find on the net doesn't necessarily translate to the sim...just something to keep in mind :D v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website
kylania Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 paulrkiii's Air Defense Guide 2.0 Wow great document! I've always used the "Well, can't be helped! Going down!" approach to SAMs, but no longer! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Christmas Cheer - A Landing Practice Mission : Beta Paint Schemes : HOTAS Keyboard Map : Bingo Fuel - A DCS A-10C Movie

Question though, does this mean the numbers in your guide might not 100% apply to the sim? Either way, great job :D
Snoopy Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Depends on who you ask....the numbers should match what's in the sim encyclopedia. But either way it's just a guide... v303d Fighter Group Discord | Virtual 303d Fighter Group Website
normntaz Posted September 13, 2011 Posted September 13, 2011 Paulkriii's guide is excellent, and looks like the product of a lot of hard work. I learned the hard way that flying over the maximum altitude of the same doesn't necessarily mean you are safe. I assume that it's the difference between manufacturer's specs v. real world performance, and I always add about 5000 feet where possible if I'm doing high altitude SAM Killing.
JEFX Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Yes this is a great package, but I want to correct the SA-8 OSA altitude engagement : I was hit a few minutes ago by a SA-8 flying at 20000ft AGL, so there are still some numbers to correct ?? JEFX Posted September 14, 2011 Posted September 14, 2011 Yes, thanks Viper, I read that on the net, but I didnt know that it was the missile that is effectively modelled in the game... Especially that, unfortunately, in the encyclopedia, many engagement altitudes and ranges are not clearly given, ex the SA-8 (I really would have loved if all ranges and altitudes of engagements were given for all units...) I remember doing experiments with BritRadarDude for hours just to try and find out what are the engagement ranges of some of the ships and artys and so on, already in the Lockon time... Sadly, the enclyclopedia of DCS-A-10 has the same flaws as Lockon's... Sometimes the ranges are not given, sometimes the ranges are more like those in real life but not exactly those in the game, etc... for the mission maker it makes life very difficult... anyways, pardon my ranting, I usually am full of praise and I really love everything DCS, and I am a fan forever! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] In DCS I fly jets with thousands of pounds of thrust... In real life I fly a humble Cessna Hawx XP II with 210 HP :D
JEFX Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 By the way, I made another experiment tonight, and I overflew a pair of OSA (SA-8) at Angels 30 (approximately 30k feet above them actually) and they didnt succeeded to shoot me down. I managed to send them some GBU-31 JDAMs from that altitude and I killed them, that means that the missile that is modeled in the game is neither the old 9M33 that had an altitude envelope of 16000ft nor the newer 9M33M3 that has a max alt of 39000 ft because I was engaged at 20k feet and not at 30k .... Unfortunately, in the encyclopedia, only the 9M33 is described (and it corresponds to the physical aspect of the SA-8's missile...) but the performances are not coherent with any of the types... 74th_Lunatic Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 74th finidings From empirical testing done by 74th_Skeptic, we work off a lethal altitude of 21400 ft for the SA8. I must add that QFE must be taken into account too. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
JEFX Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 Thanks Lunatic It is always good to know! In a way, despite our legendary love for precise simulation and everything that is real life... in the simulator, the only thing that counts is the ACTUAL lethal envelope of a threat... I would love if ED could provide those numbers for all units... I have been asking it since prehistorical times (Lockon 1.0). By teh way, have Skeptic and you worked out other interesting numbers like that that you wouldnt mind sharing? thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] In DCS I fly jets with thousands of pounds of thrust... kylania Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Management, he say no. Sorry. Management sounds selfish. Keeping that kind of information to yourself is what's wrong with gaming communities. Share that stuff for the benefit of everyone, especially in a small niche like flight sims, otherwise you certainly come off as a jerk. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Christmas Cheer - A Landing Practice Mission : Beta Paint Schemes : HOTAS Keyboard Map : Bingo Fuel - A DCS A-10C Movie
